Zinovy Efimovich was born on September 21, 1916. The family lived in the city of Sebezh (Pskov region), they had four children. The parents were Jewish by nationality. Zinovy's father was a clerk, a traveling salesman, and after the revolution he worked in the regional consumer union. Mother knew how to sing well.

Gerdt knew Yiddish and studied at a Jewish school. As a schoolboy, he became interested in poetry, at the age of 13 he composed poems about collectivization, which were published in a newspaper.

In 1932, Zinovy began to live in Moscow, like his brother. The young man entered the school of the electrical plant in order to master the profession of a fitter-patterner. He also performed at the Workers' Youth Theater. During that period, Gerdt made friends with Isai Kuznetsov, who later became a writer and screenwriter.

After graduating from college, Zinovy worked as an electrician, continued to play on stage. In 1939 he ended up in the "Arbuzov Studio", where he worked before the war.

Then Gerdt fought, volunteered for the front. He was a sapper, later became a company commander. Zinovy was seriously wounded in the leg, underwent several operations, but remained lame.

When Gerdt was in the hospital, a puppet theater performed in front of the soldiers. After the end of the war, Zinovy met with the head of the theater Sergei Obraztsov, who took him into the troupe. The actor has worked in the Puppet Theater for 40 years.

At the age of 44, Gerdt married Pravdina Tatiana, a translator. They met during a tour of the Puppet Theater. Tatiana is 12 years younger than Zinovy, but the relationship was long - the couple lived together for 36 years. Tatyana has a daughter, Ekaterina, from her first marriage, whom Zinovy Efimovich adopted.
