The opening of the 65th Cote d'Azur Film Festival began with a solemn procession along the red carpet. The guests were greeted by a giant black and white banner depicting Marilyn Monroe blowing out the only candle on the cake. Thus, the organizers of the film festival decided to pay tribute to the memory of the actress. This year marks the 50th anniversary of her death.

In the evening of the solemn day, the red carpet at the foot of the Palais des Festivals sparkled with the light of the stars that filled it. Eva Longoria, Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Jean Paul Gaultier, Diane Kruger and other famous people showed their chic and original outfits in front of thousands of cameras.

The opening of the 65th Cannes Film Festival was hosted by Berenice Bejo, who played in the film The Artist. She appeared on stage in a scarlet dress and in an instant seized power over a large audience. After the presenter's passionate speech about "silence in the cinema", the audience was introduced to a short film by the chairman of the jury of the film festival, Italian director Nanni Moretti.

Traditionally, all members of the Cannes jury were invited to the stage one by one. This year, responsible positions have been appointed: Ewan McGregor, Diane Kruger, Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander Payne, Andrea Arnold, Hiam Abbas, Emmanuelle Deveaux and Raoul Peck. As usual, the commission was assembled from representatives of various art trends. The chairman of the jury, Nanni Moretti, thanked the country "where cinematography is highly honored" in French.

The 65th Cannes Film Festival opened with Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom". Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Edward Norton and others are involved in the film. A total of 54 films will be presented at the festival, 22 of which were included in the competition program. The film “In the Fog” by Belarusian director Sergei Loznitsa will represent Russia.

It was noted that the competition program does not include a single film directed by a woman. On this occasion, on the eve of the opening of the film festival, the members of the jury held a special press conference. Actress Diane Kruger actively answered the slippery questions of journalists, who noticed that the fair sex took an active part in the side events of the festival.
