From the biography of Karl Lagerfeld

The future photographer and famous fashion designer was born in Hamburg on September 10, 1935. Talking about himself, Karl more than once misled journalists by deliberately changing his date of birth. He explained this by the fact that an error crept into his documents, which his mother told Lagerfeld only before she died.

Karl grew up in the family of a successful businessman. At the time of his birth, he already had two half-sisters: the parents' marriage was not the first.

Even in childhood, Lagerfeld spent a lot of time mastering foreign languages. He inherited his interest in linguistics from his father, who was fluent in a dozen languages. But Karl himself, in addition to German, mastered "only" English, Italian and French.

The boy was always drawn to beautiful and chic things: he received this passion from his mother. Already at the age of six, Karl knew how to tie ties and wore trendy shirts with cufflinks.

Karl Lagerfeld: on the road to glory

At the age of fourteen, Lagerfeld, with the permission of his parents, went to the capital of France. Here he entered the French Lyceum, where he studied to create fashion models. At first, Karl wanted to become a famous artist, but then he realized his true vocation: he must create exclusive clothes. Around the same years, Lagerfeld met Yves Saint Laurent. They became friends and subsequently became companions.

Karl tried to study diligently. Once he took part in a competition where the jury members were Pierre Balmand, Christian Dior and other eminent designers. Karl presented a unique coat design to their court. As a result, he received the first prize in this category. This competition changed Lagerfeld's life: he got a job at the Balman fashion house. The experience gained here helped Karl become the art director of Jean Patou. However, the public greeted his first works coolly: they were too frank.

A few years later, Lagerfeld moved to Rome and began to study the history of art. His efficiency amazed those who worked with him. Within a few months, Karl signed contracts with several fashion houses. He strove to expand the line of fashion brands and did much to add lightness to fur products.

In the early 70s, Lagerfeld became the creative director of Chanel. After the death of Coco Chanel, it was he who preserved the uniqueness and greatness of the brand. He even tried his hand at creating aromatic compositions. As a result, he got a delicate floral scent. It seems that Lagerfeld succeeds in all the cases for which he undertakes. Success follows Karl's endeavors to this day.

Lagerfeld has never been married. The designer has no children. Lagerfeld's only affection was Jacques de Basher. They met in 1971 and had a close relationship for many years, but in 1983 they fell apart. After that, Lagerfeld did not strive for a close relationship, but began to live in seclusion in his mansion, where he was helped by a few servants.
