A detective story is a literary genre that describes the process of studying a mysterious phenomenon, most often a crime. The plot of the detectives is based on solving the crime and identifying the perpetrators. National Public Radio journalists have compiled a list of the 100 best detectives of all time based on a public poll.

Step 1
Topping the list was Thomas Harris's bestselling book The Silence of the Lambs, the second novel about Hannibal Lector. In second place is the detective thriller "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" by Stig Larsson. The first novel in the Lisbeth Salander trilogy is a sealed, closed-circuit detective with elements of a family saga. The murder of a girl from an influential family, committed many years ago, could only have been committed by a person who was on the island that day, most likely a relative of the victim. In this book, the reader meets for the first time Lisbeth Salander, whose flamboyant personality lends special poignancy to Larsson's books. A girl with a difficult childhood, a genius hacker, social phobia, Lisbeth became a favorite of readers and one of the main reasons for the popularity of Larsson's detectives.

Third on the list was James Patterson's Kissing Girls. Detective Alex Cross, the hero of a series of detective novels by Patterson, this time investigates a case in which he is personally interested - a maniac kidnapped his niece. The criminal's handwriting differs in that before the murder of the victim, he surrounds her with enthusiastic, romantic worship.

The fourth place went to the detective "The Bourne Identity" by Robert Ludlum. The hero wakes up in the Mediterranean and realizes that he has completely lost his memory. A series of events indicate to him that his past life was filled with danger that haunts him to this day. To understand who wants him dead, the hero needs to identify his own personality.

Truman Capote's "Murder in cold blood" is in the top five of the list. The novel is written in a journalistic style and tells about a real crime, the murder of an entire family, mother, father and two children. The accused, two young people, tried to justify themselves by temporary insanity, but the medical examination did not confirm their version. Capote, then one of America's most popular writers, read about the crime in a newspaper. He conducted his own investigation, collected materials, interviewed criminals. As a result, a work was created, the essence and meaning of which is not limited to describing the process of solving a crime. This is a deep novel about the nature of murder, its psychological and social background.
