Elections for the President of the Russian Federation are held every six years using a voting procedure, in which every adult citizen of the country has the right to participate. Elections are held in accordance with the articles of the current legislation.
Instructions
Step 1
Elections are held throughout the territory and in all constituent entities of the Russian Federation. The procedure is organized by a special body - the Central Election Commission (CEC) of the Russian Federation. Territorial and precinct election commissions help in the preparation and processing of votes.
Step 2
The date of the elections is announced by the Federation Council no later than 90 days in advance. Usually this day falls on the second Sunday of the month in which the previous election was held. After the date is announced, the preparatory stage begins, during which candidates are nominated for the presidency.
Step 3
For a successful nomination, a citizen must meet certain requirements set by the CEC of the Russian Federation. A nominee can be a member of a political party that has the right to participate and nominate its members in the electoral process. An ordinary citizen of the country who has the support of an initiative group of at least 500 people can also become a candidate. A self-nominated candidate must collect 100 thousand signatures of voters in various constituent entities of the Russian Federation in his support. If a candidate is nominated by a political party that has the right to distribute deputy mandates, the collection of signatures is not mandatory.
Step 4
When registering, it is necessary to provide the CEC with signature lists with voters' signatures, a document confirming payment for the printing of signature sheets, a protocol with the results of collecting signatures and a list of persons who helped to collect votes. It is also required to present a financial statement of the campaign. The commission informs about its decision in the registration of a candidate within 10 days after the submission of documents.
Step 5
On the date appointed by the Federation Council, voting is held at specially equipped polling stations using anonymous ballots, which are a list of candidates running for the presidency. The voter is invited to vote only for one of the listed candidates. The completed ballot paper is dropped by the citizen into the ballot box.
Step 6
The results are calculated by the territorial bodies of the election commission and verified by the CEC. The President-elect is the candidate who received more than 50% of the votes of all voters who took part in the procedure.
Step 7
If no one crossed the 50% threshold during the counting process, the second stage of voting is carried out. It is carried out between the candidates for whom the most citizens voted. The whole procedure for elections and counting of votes remains the same as during the first stage. The election is won by the candidate for whom the largest number of voters voted in the second round.
