The change of millennia has not been easy for the Russian Federation. Controversial political and economic decisions threw the country from side to side. The last decade of the twentieth century is usually called the "dashing nineties." At this time, everything changed - the economy, ideology, foreign and domestic politics, Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin resigned from the presidency.

A common man in the street is used to indiscriminately scolding and blaming the nineties for everything, despite the fact that twenty years have passed. With the change of eras, the leader also changed: on the last day of 1999, Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin resigned as president of the Russian Federation.

Dashing nineties

The clumsy and sometimes indecisive rule of the first president of Russia gives people every right to criticize him for unpopular decisions, but the majority, in fact, have never seen the horrors of the nineties that are described in the media today. In modern articles and films, the young Russia of that time always appears in an obscene form: destroyed, humiliated and plundered. This image is firmly embedded in the minds of people, and for twenty years they continue to believe that everything that happens is the consequences of the work of the first Russian president, Yeltsin.

Yeltsin is considered a follower of Gorbachev's traitorous policies. A man who, for the sake of his interests, gave a great country at the mercy of despicable capitalism. But it was he who destroyed the myth of the inviolability of communism. He gave Russia sovereignty and freedom, which the majority would not want to give up for the sake of the "socialist paradise" imposed by the communists. Having got his hands on Russia and the chaos that had reigned in it since the beginning of perestroika, he was able to create a semblance of order that we see now.

The foreign policy of the first president of the Russian Federation also left much to be desired. Some politicians simply did not take the absent-minded, insecure and sometimes drunk president seriously. Nevertheless, under Yeltsin, the Commonwealth of Independent States was created, which included most of the countries of the Soviet Union. Under Yeltsin, friendly relations were established with the Baltic countries, with Europe and with the United States of America.

Surprisingly, some continue to criticize Yeltsin for his friendly policy towards the United States and other NATO countries. They call him a clown, a weakling and even a Bill Clinton puppet. Many are convinced that Russia began to be reckoned with only with the arrival of the second president, this is one of the popular misconceptions today. Under Yeltsin, an incident occurred that showed that Russia was a very significant figure in the political arena at that time.

The military operation, called the Pristina Throw, carried out in 1999, clearly marked Russia's position in the world. Just over two hundred Russian soldiers stopped an entire armada of American and British troops. NATO forces could have easily destroyed a small group of Russian troops, but instead they were forced to compromise.

Yeltsin's departure from the presidency

The first president of Russia left his post in the second term of the presidency ahead of schedule. Affected by the distrust of the people, age and severely undermined health. On December 31, 1999, he recorded a video message in which he asked forgiveness from the people of Russia and named the interim president. Yeltsin's successor, Vladimir Putin, very quickly managed to win the trust of citizens, received a huge credit of trust of Russians, which was reflected in high ratings, and in the next elections he became a full-fledged head of state.
