Monogamy is considered normal in most modern societies. It is still not known exactly when monogamy first appeared. However, for example, in some eastern countries (mainly Muslim), the tradition of polygamy is still preserved.
Monogamy was observed in the Ancient World. There is no single correct point of view on this issue, but most scientists agree that even anthropoid apes used this form of life together. Behavior in a flock of humanoids was different from most other species.
If a person developed along the path, for example, of the same lions, he would hardly be able to survive. The fact is that the responsibility of one male for one female greatly facilitates the process of raising children. In addition, men were highly valued in the ancient tribes and therefore they could not arrange constant battles for women. It was much easier to choose one female and live with her.
In history
In the course of history, this practice has only been confirmed. Since men had a dominant position in society for a long time, it was on their shoulders that the responsibility for the fate of the family was borne. Feeding several wives and children at once is a very difficult task. Especially if the person was not in any higher strata.
For example, from the myths of Ancient Greece and Rome, you can learn that the locals also tended to the idea of monogamy. They could have several concubines or servants, but marriage was always with only one person. By the way, same-sex marriages were common then.
Then it was the turn of religion. Christianity and many other denominations were vehemently against polygamy. And since most European countries were supported by precisely such religious views, polygamy in this region soon disappeared altogether.
In modern world
In the modern world, a similar trend is also observed. Material factors still play a significant role. If a man cannot provide for one woman and a child, then what can we say about several wives? However, there are other factors as well. For example, few modern women are ready to share the love of a dear person.
In addition, traditions, customs and laws play a huge role here. So in Russian legislation it is indicated that a marriage can take place only between two people. You can only marry again after an official divorce. Society is also not lagging behind. A man with multiple wives is unlikely to find approval.
So we can safely say that being monogamous is not a bad thing. It is not in vain that mankind has come to this form of relationship and is unlikely to abandon it in the near future. However, opponents of this idea can also easily exist in the modern world. There are many countries whose laws and customs share their ideas.
