The selection round for the Eurovision Song Contest took place in early March 2012. It was then that the collective from Udmurtia bypassed the remaining 25 participants, among whom were already well-known performers. So, it was decided that “Buranovskie grandmothers” would represent Russia.

Instructions

Step 1

The national selection competition was held in the Great Hall of the Russian Academy of Sciences. As already mentioned, 25 participants fought for the victory. Among them were four graduates of the Star Factory project - Dmitry Bikbaev, Mark Tishman, Irson Kudikova and Timati. It is impossible not to highlight the performance of two other performers who have previously performed at Eurovision: Yulia Volkova and Dima Bilan. Volkova was the bronze medalist of Eurovision-2003, and Bilan became the silver medalist in 2008. It was this pair that made great competition for the Buranovskiye Babushki.

Step 2

The team previously took part in the final of the Russian tour, this was in 2010. However, then Peter Nalich became the winner. This time, the Buranovskie Babushkas were more fortunate, and in the end they won the competition, gaining more than 38 points. Their competitors - the Bilan-Volkov pair - received about 30 points.

Step 3

In the March qualifying round, Buranovskie Babushki performed the song Party for Everybody. They have been singing in English since 2008. However, their repertoire is not limited to this. The ensemble also sings in Russian and Udmurt languages. They perform songs of famous foreign and Russian bands (such as The Beatles or Aquarium). But there is one big difference: they perform the works of other singers in the Udmurt language.

Step 4

On May 8, 2012, the winners fly to Moscow for television filming. Immediately after that, the team goes to Eurovision. This year it is being held in the capital of Azerbaijan, since representatives of this particular country won the competition in 2011. The date of the 57th Eurovision 2012 international song festival is May 22-26.

Step 5

It is not superfluous to note why such a name "stuck" to the team. The fact is that all the participants live in the village of Buranovo. It was there that Olga Tuktareva, the current head of Buranovskiye Babushki, arrived several years ago. Thanks to her, the members of the team fell under the gun of television cameras and became known far beyond the borders of their native village.
