The largest cemetery in Moscow, located in the southwest of the capital, was founded in 1972. Nikolo-Khovanskaya village was located near the new necropolis, so the cemetery was named Khovanskoye. Then it occupied an area of 50 hectares. Now the cemetery has almost quadrupled.

The burial area is divided into three parts: Central, North and West. Their area is respectively 87, 72; 60 and 50, 12 hectares. There are more than 500 burial sites in the cemetery. There is also a modern crematorium there.

Description and features of the cemetery

In the largest Moscow necropolis there is the Temple named after the Holy Prophet Forerunner and Baptist John with the borders of Prince Vladimir and Archbishop Nicholas the Wonderworker of Mirlikia, and two chapels - the icons of the Vladimir Mother of God and Marina the Reverend. Not so long ago, a burial site for people professing Muslims and a place for Muslim rituals were opened at the cemetery.

The cemetery provides for the creation of family burials. And for placing urns with the ashes of the dead, there is a special columbarium.

At the Khovanskoye cemetery, water intakes are built from natural stone, there is a water supply system, and waste bins. The territory is equipped with asphalt paths, flower beds and vases of vertical landscaping.

Many famous artists are buried at the Khovanskoye cemetery - actors, directors, composers, poets, writers, musicians, there are also graves of prominent politicians, heroes of the Great Patriotic War. Many tombs are memorials and are visited by tourists.

At the cemetery you can find the burials of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War: Pustyntseva N. P., Skobarikhin V. F., Kabanov K. M., Kirichenko M. M. and others. The illusionist Simvolokov I. K. were buried in the cemetery. (1918-1990), poet Iskrenko N. Yu., actresses of Soviet cinema V. I. Karavaeva, Lezhdey, E. I., mathematician Delone B. N., academician of RAS mathematician D. P. Kostomarov. and many other famous personalities. There are burials of members of the notorious Moscow "Orekhovskaya" criminal group in the cemetery.

Also, a feature of this place is the presence of an archive of burials, which has been kept since its foundation. The cemetery can be visited in the summer from 9:00 to 19:00 and in the winter from 9:00 to 17:00. To make it easy for visitors to navigate in the necropolis, its territory is divided into small sectors, and all the paths are indicated.
