The library of Ivan IV the Terrible is one of the mysteries of Russian history. There have been several attempts to find this collection of books. However, every time something interfered with the plans of scientists - search engines.
For several centuries, scientists have been trying to find the legendary library of Ivan IV the Terrible, also called Liberia.
This library consisted of three parts:
Books of Russian princes from Ivan Kalita to Vasily III;
Books that Sophia Palaeologus, the bride of Ivan III, brought with her as a dowry;
Collection assembled by Ivan IV himself.
Presumably the library consisted of 800 books, although according to the writer - treasure hunter Kosarev, these are only books brought by Sophia Palaeologus.
Liberia disappeared without a trace during the reign of Ivan the Terrible.
The first official searches for the collection began in 1724 under Peter I. But they did not bring any results.
Excavations carried out in the 19th century under the leadership of the director of the historical museum, Prince Shcherbatov, were also unsuccessful.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the archaeologist Stelletsky continued his attempts to find the library. Searches were undertaken by him in 1912 and 1914, but the First World War, which began soon after, prevented. Stelletsky did not give up trying and continued his search in the 30s, but again the 1941-1945 war intervened in the plans. In 1949, the scientist dies without finding Liberia.
Under Khrushchev, a plan for the search for the library was outlined, which remained only on paper.
In the 90s, the search for the library also did not yield any results.
Another mystery of Russian history has not been solved.
