The new sport was not very successful, but Ustyugov did not give up classes. Over time, the results became quite impressive. Sergei was entrusted to represent his hometown at the children's and youth championships.
Takeoff start
Quite quickly, the name of Ustyugov was included in the list of candidates for the junior national team of the country. From that moment on, the professional career of an athlete began. Sergey made it into the lineup and successfully entered the world level.
At the 2011-2012 World Championships in Turkey, the skier loudly declared himself, becoming the first in all races. An equally impressive athlete entered Estonia in an international tournament. This ensured him participation in the first Russian national team.
In the new 2012-2013 season, the promising junior transitioned to the youth level. Due to the increased level of rivals, the skier was in for an unpleasant surprise: he failed all the competitions.
Perseverance did not allow me to quit what I started. Sergei was able to partially correct the situation with a victory in the 30 km skiathlon. In the team competition, he became the third.

The athlete ended up in fifth position after completing the single sprint. He later admitted that the level of the opponents was much higher than expected, and there was hard work ahead of them to improve their skills.

A year later, Ustyugov became the first at the World Cup in Estonian Otepe. “Bronze” was won at the competitions in Rybinsk: Sergey became the second in the team event. 2016 was also successful. The athlete added a third place to the collection of awards at the Tour of Ski Championship, a victory in the World Cup mass start, and a second place in the Tour of Canada multi-day race.
The new season turned out to be no less impressive. It began with the Tour de Ski. During the first five stages, the skier was the leader. Only from the sixth race did he begin to give way to his rivals. The athlete finished second, losing to the Norwegian at a minimum. The final race was perfect and provided the coveted "gold".
