The Colosseum has been in need of repair for a long time: several thousand cracks have already been found in it, and even several cases have been recorded when whole pieces of the structure fell down. It was decided to start the reconstruction of the Colosseum on July 31, 2012.

The planned reconstruction of the Colosseum was announced by Gianni Alemano, the mayor of Rome. According to him, this building should have been restored several years ago, but it was not possible to allocate the amount necessary for this. According to estimates, the renovation will have to spend about 25 million euros, and the owner of the famous shoe company Tod's agreed to provide this money in exchange for the right to advertise in the Colosseum for 15 years.

First of all, it is planned to ban traffic near the Colosseum. During the day, several dozen buses and several hundred cars pass there every hour, and this was one of the reasons for the gradual destruction of the famous architectural monument. So that the reconstruction is not in vain, the negative impact must be reduced to a minimum. Another problem turned out to be cold: it was because of them that in the winter of 2011-2012. many cracks in the Colosseum have grown noticeably and even whole pieces of the amphitheater have fallen off.

It will take about 3 years to restore the Colosseum. The work must be carried out in six areas, each of which will be restored on average from 2 to 2, 5 years. The system of locking arches will be completely replaced, the covered galleries will be repaired, and the northern and southern facades will be restored. In addition, it is planned not only to restore the southwestern part of the Colosseum, but also to arrange a luxurious service center there with an area of about 1600 sq. m. This center will house bookshops and souvenir shops, toilets, cash desks, an information office, etc. The emergence of a service center will make visiting the Colosseum more convenient and enjoyable for tourists.

The restoration will be carried out simultaneously in several areas, but those parts of the Colosseum where no renovation work will be carried out will most likely remain open to visitors. Of course, the safety of tourists will be strictly monitored, preventing them from entering places where collapses are possible.
