Yulia Tymoshenko is a modern Ukrainian politician who is best known in the world as one of a pair of leaders of the 2004 Orange Revolution. Since 2005, she has served as Prime Minister twice. For her activities in this post in 2009, Tymoshenko was sentenced to 7 years in prison.
On April 11, 2011, the General Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine opened a criminal case against Yulia Tymoshenko on charges of exceeding the powers of the Prime Minister. It was about the conclusion in 2009 of contracts unfavorable for the country for the supply of gas from Russia. After about a month and a half, the investigation was completed, and the case was transferred to one of the Kiev district courts. In court, consideration began at the end of June 2011, and on August 5, Tymoshenko was arrested. This happened after the interrogation of one of the witnesses - Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, to whom the leader of the Orange Revolution asked questions about his son's corruption ties and business. The court ruled that in this way it prevents the questioning of witnesses and the establishment of the truth.
The trial ended on September 8, 2011, and on October 11, a verdict was announced, in which Yulia Tymoshenko was found guilty and sentenced to 7 years in prison with payment of damages of one and a half billion hryvnias (almost $ 190 million). The very next day, a new case was started against the former Prime Minister - the case, which was closed in 2001, was opened. In it, the then-future leader of the Orange Revolution was accused of "misappropriation of someone else's property" during his tenure as president of the industrial and financial corporation United Energy Systems of Ukraine. This company was created by Yulia Timoshenko together with her husband Alexander in 1991 and for some time was the largest importer of gas from Russia.
The imprisonment of a politician who lost only 3% of the votes in the last elections caused a great resonance both among Ukrainians and in world politics. Especially after the health of the 52-year-old "orange lady" deteriorated. The top officials of states and political parties of various directions expressed their disapproval of its content in the conclusion.
