Biography
Gia Kancheli was born in 1935 in Tiflis (now the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi). His parents were famous doctors, respected people. But the son chose the profession of a musician, which at first was not happy in the family. After all, in Georgia, almost everyone is a musician, you can't take it as a life's work! However, Giya Kancheli showed that it is possible.
After graduating from a secondary school and a seven-year music school, Gia entered the Geological Faculty of Tbilisi University. And only after completing this obligatory, in the opinion of the family, the musician returned to the work of his soul, enrolling in the composition department of the Tbilisi Conservatory.
Music
From the very first notes by Gia Kancheli, it became clear that the audience had an outstanding musical talent. At first, the composer was accused of everything - and in the absence of his own style, and in the absence of style in general, and in constantly repeating motives. But Gia steadily went his own way, writing symphony after symphony. From the beginning of his musical career to the end, the composer went through a difficult path of musical and personal growth, and each of his symphonies is a confirmation of this.
For one of his symphonies, the composer received the USSR State Prize. In general, the composer's collection contains many different awards of the highest level. Looking back at the path traveled by Kancheli, one can understand that we are facing a great master with his own unique style. His music cannot be confused with any other. Gia Kancheli is also known as an opera composer. At one time he worked as the head of the musical department of the Tbilisi Opera House. His opera "Music for the Living" is also recognized as a pioneer in the art of opera.
