There are no barons in the true meaning of this title either in the Gypsy language or in culture, since the representatives of this people do not have a hereditary aristocracy.

Modern Roma can be divided into two main groups - those who have been sedentary for many years, and nomads. The hierarchy, organization of life and cultural characteristics depend on which group the Roma belong to. The peculiarities of the life of the gypsy barons among the gypsy community also depend on this.

The income of the barons can come from the donations of ordinary gypsies and reach hundreds of millions of euros a year. When the gypsies need to resolve any difficult situation, they go to the baron - he will judge, help with advice, and sometimes provide financial assistance. There are also known cases when it was the barons who turned to the official representatives of local authorities with the initiative to create schools for Roma children.

In Europe, in recent years, the number of crimes committed by Roma (both locals and visitors) has steadily increased, and almost half of them are perpetrators of minors. The self-proclaimed "king of all gypsies" Romanian gypsy Florin Cioaba, unlike many other barons, recognized the need for school education for gypsy children. He has repeatedly appealed to his fellow tribesmen with calls to make sure that their children graduate from school. Thus, the "king of all gypsies" tried to help his people cope with poverty without engaging in crime.

At the same time, some modern barons not only try to take into account the opinion of the public, but are also ready to change some of the Gypsy traditions that have developed over the centuries. For example, Choaba admitted that he was wrong when he tried to marry his twelve-year-old daughter. The news about the upcoming wedding caused a public outcry, as a result, the father publicly announced that he intends to continue to fight this tradition among the Roma population.
