The events of the story by N. V. Gogol's "Taras Bulba" unfolds in the 16th century against the backdrop of a confrontation between the Zaporozhye Cossacks and Poles. The image of Taras is collective, he has absorbed the original character traits of the Cossacks who defended the borders of Russia. The end of the story is especially tragic: Taras Bulba, who lost two of his sons, is killed by the Poles.

Step 1

Ataman of the Cossacks Taras Bulba, whose sons are returning home after studying at the Bursa, indignantly received the news that his native farm was plundered by the Poles. One hundred thousand Zaporozhye army immediately sets out on a campaign, engaging in a bloody struggle with the invaders. The most elite Cossack regiment was commanded by Taras Bulba.

Step 2

Possessing an incredibly stubborn character, Taras Bulba considered himself a true defender of Orthodoxy. He was driven by fierce hatred of the enemy. Taras rejected all attempts of the Poles to enter into negotiations with the Cossacks, severely punishing apostates and traitors. When many Cossack chieftains nevertheless believed the promises of the enemy and concluded a peace treaty with the Poles, Bulba with his regiment left the army.

Step 3

With his like-minded people, Taras Bulba continued his campaign across the Polish lands, plundering castles and ruining farms. Neither Polish soldiers, nor women, nor children could escape the righteous Cossack anger. The cruelty and ruthlessness of the hero can be explained not only by his personal qualities, but also by the fact that during the war he lost two of his sons.

Step 4

Frightened by the campaign of the Cossacks, the Poles rallied their forces, putting up elite troops against the Cossacks. For several days the Cossacks left the pursuit. In one of the next battles, when Bulba's regiment was breaking through the encirclement, Taras hesitated to find his favorite pipe in the grass, which he never parted with. At that moment, he was captured by the enemies.

Step 5

The battle has not ended yet, and the Polish hetman has already ordered to deal with the hated Taras Bulba. It was decided to burn it in full view of everyone. The Poles have found a suitable tree with a top broken by lightning. The Cossack was pulled to the trunk with chains, raising them higher and nailing their hands with nails. But even at that moment, when the crucified Taras was waiting for fire to be made under him, he remembered his fighting comrades-in-arms, shouting prompting the Cossacks how best to act for them.

Step 6

Meanwhile, the fire rose higher and higher, engulfing Taras' legs and spreading along the tree trunk. In his last words, the folk hero glorified Russia and the Orthodox faith, for there is no such strength and torment on earth that the Russian soul could not cope with.
