It is necessary to see the object of art through the eyes of a particular person, his environment of life and upbringing. Thirdly, from the perspective of a person of the era when the work was created. This is the most difficult, but it gives a complete understanding.

Step 1
Find out in what historical period the work was created. The whole story is divided into time intervals. As a rule, they are associated with the ruling dynasties and their politics. Based on the available reference books, it is easy to determine the time of creation of any work of art.
Step 2
Explore this historical period. You must know the political system, the geographical location of the country, climatic conditions, poets, writers, artists and musicians of that time. Gather all the information you need. How did the common people live? What did noble people strive for? What were the contradictions in society?
Step 3
Explore the life of the author of the work. How did he spend his childhood? Did you get an education? Which of the people had the greatest influence on him? How many years did his life last and how did it end? Was the work you are considering was the first work of the author?
Step 4
Formulate your own understanding of the art object. You are not looking at life like other people. You have your own unique experience, knowledge, upbringing. All this is superimposed on your vision of the art object. What do you see and understand? Does the work in question inspire you? Does it call for anything?
Step 5
Check out the writings of contemporary critics. It is always interesting to compare your understanding with the opinion of literate people who have been studying art for years. What do you agree with? What do you disagree with?
