Sergei Mikhailovich Sokol was born in 1970 in the Ukrainian city of Sevastopol and was brought up in the family of an officer. His father managed to build a successful career as an international intelligence officer. In this regard, the family has repeatedly changed its place of residence. So the future politician spent his childhood in Cuba, and in 1987 he successfully graduated from high school at the embassy in this Republic.

Later Sokol moved to Russia, where he became a student at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. The training took place at the eastern department of the faculty of interethnic relations. During his higher education, Sergei established himself as an incredibly hardworking student, and by the time he received his diploma in 1992, he already had a Ph. D. in political sciences, and also spoke fluent English, Spanish and even Sinhalese.

Career formation

Immediately after graduating from the university, Sergei Sokol took the post of Assistant Secretary of the Russian Embassy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ecuador and worked in this position until 1995. Over the next two years, he was already entrusted with the duties of the general director for economic issues in the Moscow office of the Russian-German enterprise "Neftegazgtechnologia".

In 1997, Sokol became the chief deputy director for finance of the Norilskgazprom concern and soon moved on to the post of general director of the enterprise. By this time, he had developed firm democratic political views, and he firmly decided to connect his future life with politics. In the late 90s, Sergei Mikhailovich was elected a deputy to the Taimyr District Duma.

Political activity

Sokol remained an acting deputy of the District Duma until 2002. In early 2000, he also headed the Norilsk electoral headquarters of Vladimir Putin during the presidential elections in the Russian Federation. As a result of the campaign, about 80% of residents of Norilsk and surrounding settlements voted for Putin.

In 2002, Sokol was appointed deputy governor of the Krasnoyarsk region, Alexander Khloponin. In addition, in the territory entrusted to the governor, he was entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the activities of such main complexes as:

  • industrial;
  • logistic;
  • communication;
  • forest, etc.

Sokol was also involved in the regulation of tariffs for heat and electric resources, and carried out financial rehabilitation of key enterprises. Since 2004, the politician has already headed the staff of the Administration Council of the Krasnoyarsk Territory.

One of the most important moments in Sokol's career came in April 2005, when he organized and conducted a referendum on the unification of such subjects of the Russian Federation as:

  • Krasnoyarsk region;
  • Evenk Autonomous Okrug;
  • Taimyr Autonomous Okrug.

After the successful completion of the referendum in 2006, the politician took part in drawing up the Charter of the united entity, and a year later he became the deputy governor of the "renewed" Krasnoyarsk Territory. During the same period, he became one of the main candidates for the post of governor of the Trans-Baikal Territory, the Republic of Altai or the Republic of Tuva. His activities in the political arena were actively supported by the country's President Vladimir Putin.

Further political career of Sergei Sokol continued in the Irkutsk region. In 2008-2009, he retained the post of first deputy head of the region and even served for some time as acting governor. During this period, Sokol's extensive knowledge of economics turned out to be in demand: in 2010-2011, he worked as an advisor to the director of the national enterprise Russian Technologies, for the next four years he served as CEO of RT-Khimkompozit and then headed its board of directors, and in 2015 -m year headed the OPK "OBORONPROM".

Social and political activities also continued. Sergei Sokol remained an active member of the United Russia party and in 2016, by a large margin, won its primaries in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. With his help, a successful campaign took place to draw up a party list of the subject to the State Duma of the Russian Federation. In 2018, Sokol headed the headquarters of the Rostec enterprise and took part in the election campaign for the next presidential elections in the country. In September of the same year, he received the post of chairman of the Legislative Assembly of the next convocation in the Irkutsk region, and also entered the Board of Trustees at MGIMO of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Personal life

Sergei Sokol has been married three times. In 1999, during his first marriage, he had a son, Alexander, who is currently pursuing higher education and preparing to follow in his father's footsteps. In 2007, already in his second marriage, a son, Mikhail, appeared. The third wife of the politician, Daria, works for the state corporation "Rosatom".

Sergei Mikhailovich considers himself an avid lover of outdoor activities and in his free time he is engaged in tennis, motorcycle tourism and various sports.
