An adjective is an independent part of speech that can vary in numbers, cases and gender. In a sentence, you can find it by asking the questions "what?", "What?", "What?", "Whose?" The adjective has three categories and can function as three members of a sentence.
Instructions
Step 1
The most common role for an adjective in a sentence is definition. The adjective itself performs a defining function in relation to the noun, describing:
- shape and position: triangular;
- size: large;
- physical properties: gaseous;
- human properties: resourceful;
- space: Ural;
- time: noon;
- material: knitted;
- purpose: weaving;
- affiliation: wolf;
- quantity: triple.
It can also serve as the nominal part of a compound nominal predicate. An adjective is rare, but it can be a subject.
Step 2
The primary role of an adjective as a member of a sentence is that of an agreed definition. Relative and possessive adjectives and qualitative adjectives in full form are used as definitions. If the sentence contains a complex comparative adjective, then, without a doubt, women "the adjective in a complex comparative degree" more reasonable "is an agreed definition. The same role is played by the adjective “highest” in the sentence “The tallest building in the city is located at the intersection of Vernadsky and Zhdanov”.
Step 3
The nominative part of a compound predicate is formed by adjectives in the nominative case ("The water is clean near the shore") and in the instrumental case, if the verb "to be" is present ("The morning was sunny"). Also this role is played by possessive adjectives ("This comb of my mother's"), as well as short qualitative adjectives ("His story was joyless"). Short predicative adjectives can act as an auxiliary part of a compound verb or nominal predicate, for example: "I must open myself to you."
Step 4
An adjective can act as a subject when it replaces a noun in its meaning. This, however, is quite rare. For example, in the sentence “During the children's matinee, adults stood in the doorway,” the adjective “adults” performs the function of the subject.
