The last month of spring is not distinguished by the twelveth feast of the Church. However, there are still several dates of the calendar, which are marked by celebrations in Orthodox churches.
On May 6, the Orthodox Church celebrates the day of memory of the holy Great Martyr George the Victorious. This is the day of the angel of people named Yuri and George. The saint lived in the 4th century in Cappodacia, was of a noble family. George the Victorious during his lifetime attained the rank of a military commander. He openly confessed his faith in Christ, denouncing the ruler of the Roman Empire, Diocletian. It was for this that the saint suffered a martyr's death from the beheading of the head with the sword.
On May 8, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the holy Apostle Mark. He is the author of one of the gospels. Saint Mark wrote the shortest gospel in which he tried to reflect the divine majesty of Jesus Christ. That is why the text of the Gospel of Mark is full of descriptions of various miracles of Christ.
In May, celebrations are also celebrated for another apostle - James Zebedee. He is the author of one conciliar epistle. On the same day (May 13), the Orthodox Church commemorates the memory of the great Russian saint Ignatius Brianchininov, who lived in the 19th century. The holy ascetic is known for many letters of moral instruction to Christians.
In May, the celebration of the icon of the Virgin of Unexpected Joy is carried out (on the 14th).
On August 21, the church calendar indicates the feast of the holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian. He was one of the closest disciples of Christ. The saint wrote a gospel and three conciliar epistles, in which he explained the divine essence of Jesus Christ in a high theological syllable.
One of the most revered saints in the Russian people was Nicholas the Wonderworker. On May 22nd, the transfer of his relics from the city of Myra in Lycia to Bari is remembered. This event took place in 1087. People call this day "summer" Nicholas, while on December 19th there are celebrations in honor of Nicholas "winter". But this is one and the same saint who can be prayed for in all needs.
