The Orthodox church calendar is replete with various holidays. In August, the Christian Church commemorates some of the great saints, and there are also two great twelve church holidays.
On August 1, the entire fullness of the Russian Orthodox Church commemorates the memory of the holy Reverend Seraphim of Sarov. On this day, the relics of the great saint of God were found. In 1920, the authorities seized the relics from the believers, and only in 1991 they were found in the Kazan Cathedral of St. Petersburg. The Monk Seraphim is one of the most revered saints of Russia.
On August 2, the memory of the prophet Elijah is celebrated. This day is popularly called Ilya's Day. They pray to the Holy Prophet in drought so that rain would be sent down on the harvest. Prophet Elijah is one of the great (great) prophets of the Old Testament, known for his zealous service to one God.
On August 9, the Orthodox Church commemorates the holy Great Martyr Panteleimon. This saint is revered by the people as a great healer of bodily and mental ailments. It is customary to pray to the Holy Great Martyr in various diseases.
On August 14, the Church celebrates the Origin (wear) of the venerable trees of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord. The people call this day the first Savior. After the service, honey is consecrated. The holiday was established in 1164 in honor of the victories of the Greek king Manuel over the Saracens and Andrei Bogolyubsky over the Kama Bulgarians. Before the battle, both rulers carried holy icons and a cross to be worshiped by soldiers. The battles took place on the same day. Both kings won victories. The rulers understood this to be a sign of God's special help. That is why, during the service on this day, the holy cross is brought up for worship by believers. On the 14th of August, the Holy Dormition Fast begins.
On August 19, the fullness of the Christian Church celebrates the great feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. It is called twelve, since it is one of the 12 main celebrations of the Church. On this day, the transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor is remembered.
The 28th of August in the Orthodox calendar is marked by the feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God. On this day, the Dormition Fast ends. The feast of the Assumption is also twelve. This is the memory of the death of the Mother of God. Christians believe that the Mother of God, even after her death, does not leave believers with her help and intercession.
All church holidays are in the new style.
