It was he who burned Byron's diaries and wrote the words to the song "Evening Bells", which some people in our country consider folk.
In the light of permanent attachment, there is no such thing. However, it was this man who was able to be the favorite of his contemporaries, and then fall into a terrible disfavor with them. Some literary scholars, having studied the biography of Thomas Moore, conclude that he was a man without principles, who followed what his more dignified or respected comrades told him. Not to believe in such a primitive interpretation - if everything were so, then our hero would not have been able to think of an outright sacrilege in relation to connoisseurs of fine literature.
Childhood
In May 1779, the family of the merchant Moore, who lived in Dublin, was replenished - a son was born. They named him Thomas and raised him in the tradition of Catholicism. It must be said that at that time Ireland was under the rule of the English king, who did not favor the supporters of the Roman Church. Thomas's parents were not rich, in the circle of acquaintances there were only co-religionists, the same as themselves, poor people. Here the monarch was directly called a tyrant and cursed apostates from Catholicism.
As a teenager, the boy began to write poetry. These were works in the then popular spirit of romanticism. Their first presentation to a wide readership took place in the Irish Anthology magazine. The author was 14 years old at the time.
Youth
The old shopkeeper realized that his heir would not be behind the counter. This nugget was in need of cutting, and Thomas was sent to study at the University of Dublin. He pleased his parent when he returned home at the age of nineteen and already with a diploma, having graduated from an educational institution as an external student.
The brilliant boy during his studies managed to get acquainted with the members of the political circle "United Irishmen". Here they not only scolded the king, but also talked about the experience of the French, who managed to overthrow the Bourbons. Sometimes real Frenchmen dropped in to visit the revolutionaries, which inspired young patriots. It all ended sadly - in 1798, most of the underground workers were arrested. Moore chickened out and wrote pompous poems dedicated to the Prince of Wales, who did his best to catch the rebels.
Ideological throwing
At the court, the young man's work was highly appreciated. George III himself invited him to take the position of court poet. His father insisted that Tom accept the offer and make a career near the throne of the hated but powerful ruler. Friends, among whom were comrades in the defeated organization, asked not to do this, because unpleasant facts might emerge. The unfortunate Moore listened to the advice of the latter and in 1800 joined the Admiralty. There they quickly found a task for a beginner - he was sent on a business trip to Bermuda.
Returning to his homeland, Thomas Moore visited America. The United States at that time became the second successful example of the struggle against the monarchy after France. What the writer saw there upset him greatly. At his home, legends were told about the overseas lands, in fact, there was no smell of freedom in these lands. In 1806, in Dublin, a disillusioned traveler published a work in which he cursed the United States.
Love
In 1911 our hero met the beautiful Edizabeth Dyke. She was an actress and, like him, Irish and patriot. The poet expressed his feelings for this woman in romantic ballads and songs. The people liked such poetry, and the beloved answered with consent to the marriage proposal. Moore's life was happy times, which came to an end after the birth and death of the Moore's first child. In the future, this tragedy was repeated several times and the couple left no heirs.
Grief brought husband and wife closer together. Supporting his beloved with beautiful rhymes, Thomas was not shy of society. He did not pretend to be a sufferer, which attracted those around him. Moore became friends with many famous people of his time, including George Gordon Byron.
Best friend
Lord Byron just recently returned from a journey and managed to win the glory of a rebel. Everyone looked at him apprehensively except Thomas Moore. Their relationship began with a quarrel, but soon a friendly Irishman introduced the gloomy wanderer to bohemia and would be glad when their talent was put on a par. George's gratitude knew no bounds, he argued that, even being surrounded by a host of fans and admirers, he could only trust his best friend Thomas. It was to him that he left all his diaries and drafts, going to Greece.
In 1924 England was deafened by the sad news - Byron died. Everyone expected Moore to publish everything written by their idol, but he made a different decision. Thomas burned the inheritance of his friend, not stinging to let the curious into the personal life of the deceased. 11 years later, a biography of Byron will be published from under his pen.
Last years
Thomas Moore lived a long life and witnessed his fame. His lines were translated by the great Russian poets: Vasily Zhukovsky, Mikhail Lermontov, Afanasy Fet. Despite the lack of personal courage in the struggle for the liberation of Ireland, the creator made a contribution to the defense of his native land. He was loved by Irish patriots, read and translated by the Decembrists in Russia, the poem "Lala Ruk" fell in love with the inhabitants of the East.
Moore died in 1852 at Sloperton Cottage near Bonwood. He arrived there seriously ill - after a stroke, the unfortunate man could hardly move, his wife looked after him. The poet's body rests in the churchyard in Bromham.
