Each person sooner or later asks the question what a soul is and whether it exists at all. When does a person have a soul? What happens to the soul after death? Or maybe she lived and will live forever? However, one has only to say "the soul hurts", and everyone understands what the speech is about … Or - "he has no soul"! So where is she hiding, this elusive soul, without which a person has no right to be called a person?

Step 1

Primitive man first thought about the soul when he became interested in such phenomena as dreams, fainting, madness. The ancients believed that at the time of dreams, the soul of a person is separated from the body and travels somewhere far away, returning home in the morning. If the soul has not returned home, then the person dies. The souls of the dead migrate to the afterlife and continue to live there. You can even chat with them if you wish. If a person goes crazy, the place of his soul is taken by the soul of an evil spirit.

Step 2

The philosophers of antiquity went further. Pythagoras, Plato and Aristotle discussed the soul. The doctrine of the World Soul was put forward, of which all human souls are parts. The soul was understood as the source of life. Each soul, in turn, was divided into animal, sensual and rational. The animal soul was in the area of the abdomen, the sensual soul was in the area of the heart, the rational soul was in the area of the head. Nature and man must be in harmony, live in perfect harmony, since they are a single whole.

Step 3

With the advent of Christianity, the soul acquired a new role - they began to consider it the image of God in man. The soul is immortal, but those who have distorted the image of God in themselves will face the afterlife retribution. Therefore, in the Middle Ages, asceticism and humility of the soul were encouraged in all possible ways. In the Renaissance, philosophers again turned to antiquity, rebelling against the humiliation of man before God, because man is his best creation.

Step 4

With the development of science and philosophy, the soul began to be understood as the psyche, consciousness and the entire inner world of a person, feelings and reason. Hegel, Kant and Descartes worked on understanding the essence of the soul. In medicine, the concept of "mentally ill" appeared - a person who is out of tune with his own inner world. All other theories about the soul, its shape, color and posthumous separation from the body are not confirmed by official science and belong to the field of esotericism. Perhaps this secret will be revealed one day. But, perhaps, each of us is destined to open it on our own at the appointed hour.
