The future Russian boxer was born on April 2, 1983. His homeland is the city of Kopeysk in the South Urals. From a young age, Sergei was fond of sports. He started boxing at the age of eleven.

Kovalev's debut in big-time sports was his performance at the Russian Amateur Championship in 1997. He won gold in the middle weight category in the youth group.

As part of the youth team, Sergei took part in the European Championship. The athlete twice in 2000-2001 became a finalist of the national championships among youths.

Sergey's performance at the Olympic Hopes winter championships in 2002 and 2003 was also successful: competing with athletes aged 19-22, Kovalev became a finalist.

The achievements of the talented boxer allowed him to fight for the title of champion according to the North American Boxing Association in 2011. Playing against Kenyan Douglas Otieno, Kovalev laid down his opponent in the first minute and opened the scoring for the prestigious championship belts.

But in a duel with American Grover Young, Kovalev could not win. In this fight, which took place in the summer of 2011, the winner was not determined. After a powerful blow from Sergei, the American was injured and could not continue the fight, the result was a technical draw.

In December 2011, a fight took place between Kovalev and Roman Simakov, the WBC Asian champion. The meeting ended tragically: after the fight, Sergei's rival fell into a coma and soon died in the clinic, never regaining consciousness. Kovalev was awarded the victory by technical knockout. Sergei was very worried about the death of his ringmate. He handed over the money raised for his next fight to the Simakov family.

In subsequent years, Kovalev managed to repeatedly confirm his title of one of the strongest boxers on the planet.
