In a society free from prejudices, women have equal rights and opportunities with men. However, the declaration and practice do not always coincide. American philosopher Martha Nussbaum harshly criticizes the established order in the United States.
Starting conditions
How the human development index is measured has been known for a long time. However, different measurement techniques show different results. This problem requires additional research. This is the opinion of Martha Nussbaum, a specialist in ancient philosophy. She was one of the organizers of the Human Development and Ability Society humanitarian organization. Her research interests include political science, ethics and some areas of the philosophy of gender. The professor of ethics examines in depth the origins of feminism and the rights of sexual minorities.
Martha was born on May 6, 1947 in a wealthy American family. Parents at that time lived in the famous city of New York. My father was engaged in jurisprudence. Mother worked as an interior designer. There was a stable income in the house. The girl did not lack love, food, or basic necessities. At the same time, already in adolescence, Martha was imbued with the ideas of equality and freedom of choice. She easily communicated with peers of her circle, and with representatives of the poor, whose development opportunities were limited.
Scientific and educational activities
From an early age, Martha showed independence in reasoning and actions. Following the classic American rule, she wanted to succeed in life on her own, without outside help. Even if this help comes from close relatives. After school, the girl entered New York University, winning a state scholarship. Here Nussbaum studied theater and classical literature. In the process of accumulating knowledge, she developed an interest in philosophy. Then Martha decided to get a specialized education at Harvard University.
In his writings, Nussbaum convincingly argues that the existing structure of society is leading humanity to degradation and extinction. The inequitable distribution of wealth negatively affects both the poor and the rich. In her book Quality of Life, Martha proved that the indicator of economic efficiency, GDP, no longer reflects the true state of affairs in society. The relationship between a particular person and state institutions requires a radical change. The pursuit of profit by corporations has lost its creative role.
