Mata Hari was born on August 7, 1876 in Leeuwarden in the north of Holland. Her real name was Margaret Gertrude Celle. The pseudonym Mata Hari means "the eye of the dawn". During the period of theatrical performances, Mata was so beautiful and graceful that the audience could not take their eyes off her.
She shocked many with her oriental dances. One of the famous numbers was "Fire Dance". Once a dancer said: "I owe my success not to the art of dancing, but to the fact that the first one dared to take off her clothes." Mata danced in Madrid, Monte Carlo, Berlin. Everywhere her performances were successful.
Her earnings were very high. But Mata was a spender, so her house was constantly visited by creditors. She was the mistress of famous people, officials, princes, academics and many others. Her real love was the Russian pilot Maslov. But they were never meant to be together.
Everything changed in a wonderful life when the First World War began. Fewer and fewer fans appeared at the performances, and Mata Hari began to earn less. She was offered a job as a spy. With her charming appearance, she knew how to get all the necessary information.
One day after the failure of the operation, it was accused that Mata was a double agent. Because of this, she was sentenced to death. Mata Hari's life ended on October 17, 1917 near Paris.
