Baptism of a person is an important and responsible step on the path of spiritual development. Baptized into the Christian faith, an adult makes a promise (vow) to keep the commandments and canons of faith, renounce evil, love everyone around and please God. For a baptized baby, such vows are given by godparents, who throughout the life of their godson are responsible for his actions before God and conscience. Therefore, the choice of godparents is extremely important.
Instructions
Step 1
The Orthodox tradition prohibits becoming a godparent to a close relative: brother, sister, uncle, aunt, mother, father, and so on. For this role, it is better to invite a friend whom you completely trust.
Step 2
The second selection criterion is the attitude of the future godparent (recipient) to religion. An atheist will most likely refuse your offer, but a wandering person who does not attend church regularly and does not consider it necessary to observe the church charter is more dangerous: he himself, not having a solid spiritual support, will take responsibility for the child and will certainly ruin him.
Step 3
The recipient after the ordinance of baptism becomes almost a member of your family. According to the canons of the Christian faith, he must teach the child the basics of religion and instruct in the spiritual and moral sphere. Make sure that the future godfather not only attends church, but can also attract your child to religion, help him adapt and orient himself in Christianity, and not turn him away from the faith.
