Stockings are a type of women's footwear. In the Middle Ages, stockings were worn by representatives of both sexes, but in the modern world this item belongs exclusively to the ladies' wardrobe.

Step 1

Stockings appeared about two thousand years ago, and the first mentions of them by fashion historians were spied in Byzantium. Colored and patterned, woolen and silk - this accessory has been knitted for a long time. Machine production came much later. In the Middle Ages, every man wore stockings, tying them with laces to low belts, which ended the peplum of their lower jackets. When the first stocking machine was invented at the end of the 16th century, stockings became much more interesting. Especially gorgeous looked those that were embroidered with silver and gold threads at the ankle. Just at this time, women began to wear stockings. Ladies certainly used soft, beautifully embroidered and very spicy garters. Interestingly, women's stockings were always hidden under puffy petticoats, while men's, on the contrary, were always in plain sight.

Step 2

In 1900-1914, fantastic fishnet stockings came into fashion, mostly lace, with various patterns (antennae, flowers), sometimes these patterns have a symbolic meaning (anchor, web). The material for these stockings is mostly silk and fine cotton. Smooth-woven stockings with hand or machine embroidery of a certain motif of flowers, birds, or with inserts of Brussels lace were considered especially elegant. Along with these elegant stockings, athletic stockings in a cage or strip were worn, which were also sometimes worn for an elegant toilet.

In the mid-1920s, scientists discovered nylon. It was supposed to replace the expensive natural silk that was brought from Japan and China. These monopoly countries, taking advantage of their exceptional position in the production of silk, broke huge sums of money for it and dictated their terms to Europe and America. Over the years, the stockings have gradually improved: to give them greater strength, the so-called "French heel" appears - fildekos was added to the main fiber in the heel and toe area. She was replaced by the "Havana heel", which, in fact, has become an analogue of the French. Women begin to wear white stockings, the more women's skirts are shortened, the more attention is paid to stockings and shoes.

Step 3

Now stockings are again an indispensable clothing for legs. Any fashionista, regardless of the preferred style, should have at least a few pairs of stockings in her wardrobe.

Perhaps this stereotype has been entrenched in the male subconscious for centuries - women's stockings have become a symbol of accessibility, flirting, an invitation to an intimate acquaintance. Of course, when they are worn on a slender female leg and under a short skirt you can see their lace edge, no man can remain indifferent and, at least, will not try to get to know each other.
