Any teenager is a rebel at heart. Everything new, interesting and delightfully dangerous is close to him. Popular books for teenagers are those where adventure and romance are contained in equal parts. Any bias in one direction or the other deprives you of interest. For a teenage girl, romance in the books will be of paramount importance, and the imbalance in adventure will not cause overwhelming delight. For boys, as is typical, the opposite is true.
Although, of course, all people are different and everything may be different.
“The House In Which” Miriam Petrosyan opens the list of books for teenagers. 16 is a wonderful age, full of exploration and adventure, but the heroes of this book, it would seem, are devoid of all this. They live in a disabled home. The house replaced them with the street, and the cafeteria, and the apartments of friends. They are divided into five flocks. They quarrel and reconcile, fall in love and make lifelong friends. Each of them has some kind of disadvantage. Someone cannot walk and is forced to move in a wheelchair, someone has no hands, someone suffers from diseases of the spine, someone is blind from birth, and someone's parents have too little time and desire to raise a child. But everything changes when the inhabitants of the house cross the border and end up on the wrong side, where you can find the Master of Time, meet the sweet-voiced Saara, run into a werewolf, or live for several years as an ordinary person, falling into a coma in reality. The house is full of mysteries that are just waiting to be solved. Miriam has been creating this beautiful and mysterious world for almost ten years.
Reading the book "House of Peculiar Children" by Rensom Riggs is quite creepy because of the specially selected photographs by the author. Or text written specifically for photographs. Modern books for teenagers are valuable because they are not always written for their target audience. Jacob is 16 and practically grew up with his grandfather's stories about the place he grew up in. This is a house where strange children live. Their strangeness lies in the abilities they have. A flying girl or a man in which bees live. All this seemed to Jacob as tales of his grandfather, and the photographs he showed were falsifications. But one day, life was divided into before and after. His grandfather was killed, practically in front of him, by an unknown monster, and he himself felt from and to how unpleasant it is when they do not believe you. And in order to restore his mental health, he goes to the company of his father to the island, where the same house should be located. He is looking for answers to the questions: did his grandfather lie to him? Who are the people in the pictures? And how can they write letters if the house has long been destroyed?
When describing books for teenagers, one cannot fail to mention "The Daughter of the Iron Dragon" by Michael Swanwick. The novel has long been recognized as a cult. Stephen Chbosky's “Good to Be Quiet” is a completely different order of contemporary literature than the rest of the books presented. But this does not detract from her merits. The book is written in the genre of modern prose. Charlie is an ordinary schoolboy who goes through the emotional crises typical of a teenager. He writes letters to his friend, but does not send them. This guy is not even aware that there is some Charlie who considers him a friend. He suffered terrible losses and lost two close people at once - his best friend and aunt. This was the reason for his depression. But now new friends, experience and, of course, first love appear in his life. How will this all end? Read it yourself.
