Demonstrating all his creativity and talents at the screening, Markus was enrolled in the academy of the eminent club. Thanks to consistently high results and progress, Markus was transferred to the adult team of Gothenburg a year later. The debut for the main squad took place in April 2005 in the opening round of the national championship against Malmo. In August of the same year, Berg scored his first professional goal. Berg quickly settled into the senior team, and during the season smoothly moved from the rotation to the main team. In total, Berg spent three full seasons at Gothenburg, in which he appeared 73 times on the field and upset opponents 31 times with a goal. At the end of the season, Berg agreed on a contract with the football club "Groningen" and moved to Holland. For two seasons in the Netherlands, the talented footballer showed very good performance (in 69 meetings he scored 44 goals), but he could not win trophies. In 2009, another move took place, this time to Germany. The contract with the German "Hamburg" was calculated for four years. High competition and a different pace of the game affected the performance of Marcus. In 44 matches in which he appeared on the field, Berg scored just ten goals. The next season he spent at the Dutch club PSV on loan. A temporary move to Holland was also not very productive (41 matches and ten goals). Upon his return from loan, Berg lost his place at the base and spent the remaining two seasons on the bench, occasionally coming out as a substitute.

In 2013, the Greek "Panathinaikos" agreed on a contract with Markus Berg and the further career of the Swedish footballer continued in Greece. For four years in the new club, Berg played 152 matches, in which he scored 95 times, and in 2014 he won the Greek Cup with Panathinaikos. Since 2016, Marcus has been playing for Al Ain Football Club in the Arab Emirates Football League.
