In 1956 he graduated from his university and began working in two theaters: Kiev and Lvov Youth Theaters. At the same time, he still managed to teach at the Kiev Franko Theater. And Roman Grigorievich's directorial debut on the theater stage took place with the staging of the play "It's Not So Simple" based on the play by Shmelev. It was the stage of the Lviv Youth Theater that became for him the arena of acting in his subsequent projects: "City without Love" and "Don Juan".

And then there was the position of the chief director of the Kalinin Youth Theater (1968-1969), the beginning of directing films-performances (since 1968), staging in Moscow, Kiev and Vilnius (early 70s), working as a leading director at the Lithuanian Russian Drama Theater (1970- 1974), the position of chief director of the Student Theater of Moscow State University (1977-1979), productions at the Vilnius Russian Drama Theater (80s).
