Cinematography allows a talented person to reveal different facets of his talent. Often, after several projects, an actor wants to try his hand at directing or write a cool script. This was the route that Yorgos Lanthimos took.
Starting conditions
Filmmakers often use television and cinema as a way to show a wide range of people their ideas about the world around them. There is nothing new or reprehensible in this approach. Yorgos Lanthimos belongs to the generation of “young” stage directors. He made his first feature film after forty years. Until this time, Lanthimos did not mess around. Received education. I did practice. Earned money for a living. In the 90s he became famous as a director of commercials and music videos.
The future screenwriter and producer was born on May 27, 1973 into an average Greek family. Parents at that time lived in the famous city of Athens. My father regularly went to work in neighboring European countries, and one day he did not return home. The mother stretched out with all her might, bringing her four children into the “people”. Yorgos was the youngest. He had to wear clothes and shoes that were left over from his older brothers. The child grew up among peers who ate better and dressed better. At school, the boy studied well, although he did not have enough stars from the sky.
Professional activity
After graduating from school, Yorgos decided to get a specialized education at the directing department of the Athens Institute of Film and Television. Lantimos studied at the expense of the state budget. In 1995, having received his diploma, he made a short film that went unnoticed by audiences and critics. There were no suitable options for engaging in their own creativity. And then Yorgos began to develop a commercial niche. He began producing custom commercials. At the same time, he recorded music videos for novice vocalists and musicians. At the same time, he managed to work on scenarios for the theater.
The production of promotional materials allowed Lanthimos to gain invaluable experience in editing and sound recording, as well as earn some capital. His creative career progressed slowly, but along an increasing trajectory. Yorgos made his first film based on his own script, entitled My Best Friend, in 2001. Three years later, he was recruited into a creative team of artists and screenwriters who were involved in staging the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2004 Olympics in Athens. In 2009, the film by the Greek director "Fang" received a special jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
Prospects and personal life
In 2015, Lanthimos shot The Lobster at one of the UK's leading film studios. Two years later, the movie "The Killing of the Sacred Deer", which was filmed in Hollywood, was released. Both films have been awarded with prestigious awards and prizes.
Yorgos's personal life can be told in a nutshell. He has been legally married for a long time. Husband and wife belong to the same workshop. Spouse is a director, spouse is an actress. The couple have no children yet.
