The American TV series "House MD" over the history of its eight-year show has more than once broke all popularity records thanks to its charming characters and dashing plot twists. However, the most unexpected plot move was the sudden suicide of Dr. Lawrence Kutner, a member of House's diagnostic team.
Six by nine
Actor Call Penn played Dr. Lawrence Kutner in 37 episodes. He first appeared in Episode 2 of the fourth season, when House was forced to recruit a new team after the collapse of the old one.
Initially, the energetic Indian received the serial number 6, but was kicked out for snitching on his competitors. However, Kutner was so eager to work with a brilliant diagnostician that he not only did not leave the hospital, but also solved a momentary diagnostic problem. To test the liver's health, he gave the patient tequila, which House regarded as an out-of-the-box thinking.
Back on the team, Kutner flipped his number plate from sixth to ninth.
Sudden death
The audience did not have time to get the impression that Kutner worked at Princeton-Plainsboro for a long time, although Dr. Wilson later mentioned that two years had passed. However, with his original methods of work, Kutner won everyone's sympathy.
In the character's behavior, there were no prerequisites for the fact that in the 20th episode of the fifth season, Foreman and Thirteen found him on the floor with a bullet in his head. With a pistol bearing Kutner's prints nearby, police classified the death as a suicide.
Trying to smooth over the bewilderment and indignation of the audience, House himself, according to the plot, did not believe in Kutner's suicide and tried to investigate his death as a murder. But the mystery remains unsolved - Detective House has not found confirmation of his ideas.
Producer David Shore admitted that Sherlock Holmes is the prototype of Dr. House. With the investigation into Kutner's death, this idea came to fruition. John Wilson played the role of Dr. Watson.
In the president's team
However, the audience found it easier to reveal this secret than Dr. House. Immediately after the episode aired, Cal Penn announced that he was invited to take the post of assistant head of the public relations department in the Barack Obama administration.
Prior to that, Penn worked for a year and a half as part of the election program of the future president, so the high post was a natural result of his efforts. Penn's main tasks were to represent the interests of Asian and island communities in America, as well as to connect the president with bohemians.
“Since childhood, I had two dreams - to become an actor and to work in the public service, - shared his thoughts Cal Penn in an interview. “So when the opportunity arose before me, I informed David Shore and Katie Jacobs that I was leaving the project.”
For the failure of the contract, Penn had to pay the producers of the series a substantial forfeit.
According to Penn, this decision was not easy for him, because the series was at its peak. The scriptwriters had to urgently come up with a plot move to free the valuable specialist, but few people liked the final version of Dr. Kutner's departure.
