Take the statistics for your locality. It is most convenient to use the results of the latest population census, especially if you need information about a large city or an entire region. However, in many places the population is kept in addition to the census. Ask your local administration which department is in charge of this. In large settlements there are departments of statistics, in small settlements the functions of committees and sectors are often combined.

In Russia, the working age begins at the age of 16. Therefore, subtract the number of children and adolescents under 15 years of age from the total population. Find data on the number of men and women over this age. Men are considered able-bodied up to 59 years, inclusive, women - up to 54. Subtract the data on the population of retirement age for each category. Add the numbers of working-age women and men.

The statistics also take into account such a category as disabled people receiving a pension. To count them or not to count in this case depends on the purpose of the study. If, for example, you need to calculate the coefficient of social burden on the working-age population in a small settlement, then the number of disabled people must be subtracted from the total number of residents of a given age and added to those who are not working. The social load factor is the ratio of the number of the disabled population to the total number, that is, Kn = (Kst + Kmt + Ki) / Ktot. In most cases, this indicator is calculated as the ratio of the sum of the number of older and younger people to the total population. That is, in general terms, the formula will look like Kn = (Kst + Kmt) / Kbsch. The number of people with disabilities of working age can be a very important indicator for the development of all kinds of social programs, the receipt of subsidies by a settlement, the planning of new industries, where it is possible to create jobs for this category of residents.

Data on the number of men and women of working age can be important in and of itself. Compare them and determine which labor force is predominant in your city or town. To open a new production, an entrepreneur needs to know whether he will be able to hire workers capable of working in a new enterprise, because not all jobs can be used by both men and women. It is no less important for the head of the local administration to think about how the settlement will develop further and whether there is no point in attracting an investor capable of creating industries with predominantly male jobs in a settlement with predominantly female jobs and vice versa.
