Population density is an important characteristic that determines the degree of population in a given territory. This statistical indicator is used in management and allows planning its development. By the size of the population density, one can judge how comfortable a given territory is for human living. It is measured by the number of inhabitants permanently residing in it per unit area, which is usually taken as 1 square kilometer.
Instructions
Step 1
To determine the population density of any territory, you can use the statistical data that are in the public domain. Make queries on well-known internet search engines. If the population density of the territory you are interested in is not indicated directly, then calculate it yourself by dividing the total population that lives within its borders by the area of this territory in square kilometers.
Step 2
In the event that the area you are looking for is not so significant, and there is no information on its area and population on the Internet, you can contact the local statistics department, which has federal subordination, with a request. According to Articles 5 and 29 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, citizens of the country have the right to receive such information, it does not apply to information constituting a state secret. In a letter addressed to the head of the statistical office for your area, ask for information about the area of the territory you are interested in and the number of people who are registered as living there.
Step 3
You can also send such requests to the administrations of settlements or city districts. Naturally, information on the number of residents will be provided to you as of the date of the last census. Information about the area of the territory, as a rule, changes very rarely. This can only happen if a new territorial-administrative unit is formed and the borders of neighboring territories change.
Step 4
When calculating the population density from the total area of a given territory, one should exclude the areas of territories unsuitable for habitation and large hydrographic objects - lakes, bays, reservoirs, seas.
Step 5
When calculating the areas of large territories, which have vast urbanized inhabited territories and those located in rural areas, keep in mind that the density of their settlement can differ several times or even tens of times. In this case, the population density is defined as the average of these values.
