Basic scientific research does not bring immediate benefits. Only in the course of time do devices and mechanisms for commercial purposes appear. Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Victor Veselago studied optical effects.
Starting conditions
In the current chronological period, people have every opportunity to learn about their origin. The history of your ancestors can be restored thanks to the latest information technology. Viktor Georgievich Veselago was born on June 13, 1929 in the family of a hydraulic engineer. Parents at that time lived in the village of Kichkas on the banks of the Dnieper. My father worked as a leading specialist in the construction of the famous Dnieper hydroelectric power station. The mother was engaged in housekeeping and raising children. Victor had an older brother Andrey.
The grandfather of the future physicist served in the navy for many years. He took part in two round-the-world trips. Father for the construction of the Dneproges was awarded the Order of Lenin. In 1937 he died in a train accident. When the war broke out, the Veselago family was evacuated to Tashkent. Here Victor earned money by repairing shoes and filling galoshes. Returning to Moscow, Veselago continued his studies at school. At that time, teenagers were obsessed with radio engineering. From the parts bought at the flea market, the young radio technician assembled a receiver, thanks to which he heard the message about the end of the war.
Professional activity
After school, Victor wanted to continue to engage in radio engineering. Together with a friend, they went to institutes and chose a suitable educational institution for themselves. Almost by accident, Veselago entered the Physics and Technology Faculty of Moscow State University to acquire the specialty of radiophysics. Having received a specialized education, the young specialist in distribution went to work at the Physics Institute of the Academy of Sciences. Veselago's first scientific adviser was the famous Soviet scientist Alexander Mikhailovich Prokhorov, the future Nobel Prize laureate who invented the laser.
After several trial experiments, Viktor Georgievich chose the direction of fundamental research. He became involved in the study of magnetic fields and materials that are capable of magnetization. It is important to note that he was not limited in his choice of scientific interests. In the 60s, the scientist's achievements were used in an installation for obtaining superstrong magnetic fields. Veselago then theoretically formulated and described material with a negative refractive index. A few years later, British scientists have embodied a flat "Veselago lens".
Recognition and privacy
The scientific work of Viktor Veselago was appreciated by the government of the country. In 1967 he was awarded the USSR State Prize in Science and Technology. A few years later, the theoretical physicist received the title of Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation.
The personal life of Viktor Georgievich Veselago has developed well. He lived his entire adult life in a legal marriage. The husband and wife raised and raised a son and daughter.
The scientist passed away in September 2018.
