Parents lived in the city of Chicago. My father worked at a meat products factory. The mother was engaged in housekeeping and raising children.
From an early age, Leslie grew up as a sickly child. He contracted polio and amblyopia. The future writer managed to overcome these pathologies by the age of sixteen. Despite being seriously ill, Waller was able to complete a course at Hyde Park High School. Already in this chronological period, the teenager became interested in writing. He wrote short stories and essays. The future novelist saw his first publications on the pages of the Chicago Sun-Times. The young man worked as a reporter for the crime news department. It was difficult and at times dangerous.
Writing activity
When World War II broke out, Leslie volunteered for the Air Force. Private Waller served as a cipher officer at the heavy bombers' control room. Having plunged into the atmosphere of sorties, bombing and combat losses, Leslie did not leave his works on future books. Returning home from the victory, Waller published his first novel, Lying Like a Lady. Then a book, written under the impression of military service "Three Days Later", saw the light of day. After the publication of this book, the author realized that he lacked special education. Leslie enrolled at the University of Chicago and received a Bachelor of Arts degree.
At this time, the writer tied his fate with the actress and photographer Patricia Mahen. They left the borders of their native country and lived for almost fifteen years in Italy and England. Waller continued his work and regularly sent manuscripts to various publishers. The work of the famous novelist was well paid, and the spouses did not live in poverty. In 1995 they returned to their native shores. The town of Rochester on the shores of Lake Ontario was chosen as the place for permanent residence.
Recognition and privacy
Waller's writing career went well. He has written nearly fifty novels. The trilogy "Banker", "Family" and "American" were included in the New York Times bestseller list.
The personal life of the writer was not so smooth. He is married twice. In his first marriage, two daughters were born, whom he took care of until the end of his days. The second marriage proved to be lasting. Husband and wife lived by common interests and almost never quarreled. Leslie Waller passed away in March 2007.
