Russian economist and public figure Andrei Yuryevich Brezhnev is better known as the grandson of the General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee. His grandfather was at the head of the state for almost two decades. Andrei decided to continue the work of the famous relative and tried to build a career in the political arena, but failed.
Economist
Andrey was born in 1961. His childhood and youth were spent in Moscow. The boy's father, Yuri Brezhnev, was the son of the general secretary and held major posts in the foreign trade ministry. Despite his busy schedule, he always found time to communicate with his children and grandchildren, especially after retirement.
After graduating from school, the younger Brezhnev received his higher education at MGIMO. The certified international economist started working as an engineer at the Soyuzkhimexport association. In 1985, he was entrusted with the post of attache of the foreign economic unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the 90s, like many others, he made a living in commerce and ran the Children Are Our Future charitable foundation.
Politician
Brezhnev took up his political career in 1998. He initiated the creation of the "All-Russian Communist Social Movement", after which he decided to be nominated for the post of head of the Sverdlovsk region. But it was defeated even at the registration stage. A year later, Andrei nominated the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia as a candidate for the seat of the capital's vice-mayor, and again refused to include him in the lists of candidates. The aspiring politician was supported by Alexey Mitrofanov, who was Andrey's classmate and party colleague. On his advice, Brezhnev got into the elections to the State Duma as a self-nominated candidate, and won a little more than 2% of the vote, which did not give him the opportunity to receive a deputy mandate. Slightly fewer voters supported him in the 2001 election for governor of the Tula region.
In 2002, Brezhnev created a political movement of "new communists", stating that they would not support Gennady Zyuganov in the upcoming elections. But the Ministry of Justice repeated its refusal to register, and two years later a paradoxical situation occurred - Brezhnev joined the Communist Party of the Russian Federation and remained its member for 10 years.
In 2014, like-minded people of the Communist Party of Social Justice elected Brezhnev as their leader. At number one from "KPSS-2012" he was nominated in the Republic of Mari El, Sevastopol and Crimea. The number of votes collected was insufficient to enter the regional Legislative Assembly. Two years later, the Rodina party proposed him as a candidate for the State Duma elections - and again he was defeated. The path of Andrei Yuryevich to the political Olympus turned out to be such a thorny one. During this time, he took part in the election races several times, but luck never accompanied him.
Personal life
In the biography of Andrei there were two marriages. The first wife, Nadezhda, was the same age as him, they got married at a young age. Soon there were children - Leonid and Dmitry. Today the eldest son serves as a translator in the military department, the youngest graduated from Oxford, is making progress in the field of computer programs. Having filed a divorce, her spouse married a famous businessman Mamut. The new darling of Brezhnev's name was Elena.
Andrey Yuryevich spent his last years in Sevastopol, besides that, he had a house not far from Yalta. All his life he recalled with nostalgia the time when his grandfather ruled the country. According to him, Leonid Ilyich made a significant contribution to the development of the state, these were the times when a person had a full package of social guarantees. He took very painful ridicule and criticism of the former secretary general. From the whole family, he was distinguished by an amazing external resemblance to the famous relative.
In the summer of 2018, sad news came from Crimea that Andrei Brezhnev had died of myocardial infarction.
