Amrita Singh made her film debut in 1983, playing one of the main roles in the Indian film The Power of Love, which was shown in the USSR as well. In general, in the eighties and early nineties, she was a very famous and sought-after actress. However, in our time, she continues to periodically appear in Bollywood.
Early years and career as an actress until 1993
Amrita Singh was born on February 9, 1958 in the family of a high-ranking Indian military man Shivinder Singh and a socialite Ruhsana Sultan.
As a child, she attended Modern School, a private boarding school in New Delhi. Here Amrita Singh received a fairly good education. She is known to know several languages - Hindi, Punjabi, as well as English.
Amrita got into the world of cinema thanks to the connections of her influential mother. Her career began in 1983. This year she starred in The Power of Love directed by Rahul Lavail, and it was, in essence, her first film work. And the main male character here was played by Sunny Deol, who later also became a very popular actor in India (and for him, by the way, it was also his debut in cinema).
The film "The Power of Love" tells a rather simple story: an eccentric and very capricious rich girl Roma (who is played by Amrita) falls in love with an honest and kind, but poor guy named Sunny. The girl's father strongly opposes this relationship, but the romance between young people still continues to develop. Moreover, this novel is gradually changing the character of Roma for the better.
This film was shown in cinemas in the USSR in the eighties, and many Soviet citizens liked it. However, in India itself, the picture was also a huge success. Many viewers drew attention to the brilliant performance of debut actors Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh, as well as the great chemistry that emerges between them in the frame.
After a successful debut, Amrita began to receive quite a few offers from various directors. In 1984, she starred in the film Cruel World, in 1985 in the films Sunny, Sahib and in the Indian action movie Raja, which grossed the largest box office in her country that year. In 1986, she appeared in such films as "The Name", "Twists of Fate" and "Chameli's Wedding", and in 1987 - in the action movie "Egoist". In general, in the eighties she had a chance to act with many other stars of Indian cinema. In particular, her filming partners were Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor, perhaps the most famous Indian film actors of the time.
Until 1993, Amrita worked a lot in Bollywood. Moreover, she showed herself as a versatile actress, agreeing to play not only positive, but also negative heroines. Exactly how Amrita portrays the villains can be seen and appreciated, for example, by watching the films "A Gentleman's Dream" (1992) and "Love Triangle" (1993).
In The Love Triangle, the heroine of Amrita (her name, as in The Power of Love, Roma), for the sake of a career in cinema, first brutally abandons her fiancé, and then completely wants to destroy his romance with another girl. This role really turned out to be very bright, for her Amrita Singh received the Filmfare Indian Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. After that, her first child was born, and she decided to interrupt her film career.
It should be noted that in general for ten years, from 1983 to 1993, she starred in more than forty films.
Return to the cinema
Only nine years after her retirement from Bollywood, Amrita Singh reappeared on the cinema screens. In the 2002 film Martyrs, March 23, 1931, dedicated to the life of two revolutionaries - Chandrasekhar Azad and Bhagat Singh, Amrita played the role of the mother of one of them.
And in 2005 she became part of the cast of the Indian soap opera Kavyanjali. The first episode of this television series aired on Star Plus in 2005. All in all, more than 340 episodes of 24 minutes each were filmed. The series had very high ratings and received numerous awards. Specifically, Amrita Singh played one of the key female characters - the rich widow Nitya Nanda.
And in 2005 she appeared in the thriller Mohita Suri "The Night That Turned Life". And here, by the way, she also played a negative heroine.
The next film with the participation of Amrita was released in 2007. It was called The Lokandwala Skirmish. By genre, this film is an action movie, and its plot is based on real events. Amrita Singh here portrayed the mother of the protagonist - the gangster Dolas.
And among the latest films with the participation of the famous film actress, it is worth mentioning "Aurangzeb" (2013), "Flying Jatt" (2016), "Hindi School" (2017), "Revenge" (2019).
Personal life and children
In the life of Amrita Singh there were several bright novels. In 1988, she began dating actor, producer and politician Vinod Khanna, who was fifteen years her senior. They even announced their engagement.
However, the wedding never took place. The reason for this was the acquaintance at the next filming with the actor Saif Ali Khan. It is known that it was Saif who took the initiative, and Amrita simply reciprocated. By the way, Saif, unlike Vinod, is younger than Amrita (by as much as 12 years!).
Ultimately, the actress broke off her engagement with Khanna, and in 1991 she officially became Ali Khan's wife.
In 1993, the couple had a daughter, Sarah. And eight years later, they had a second child - a boy Ibrahim.
Amrita Singh and Saif Ali Khan were considered one of the brightest couples in Bollywood. However, at some point, their marriage still cracked. In 2004, after thirteen years of marriage, they divorced (while the children remained with Amrita).
After that, the actress never got married again. But Saif Ali Khan married again - to Kareena Kapoor.
It should be noted that the daughter of Amrita Singh is already quite old. There is information that she graduated from Columbia University in the United States. In addition, in 2018 she also tried her hand at cinema, playing one of the main roles in the film "Kedarnath".
And Ibrahim, by the way, has also already appeared on the big screen - in 2008, being still a very young child, he starred in the action movie "Desperate".
