Reading books in the foreign language being studied is an exciting and rewarding activity. So you immerse yourself in the culture of the language and its speakers, learn new speech patterns and ways of using words. Translating a book from English at the initial stage of study is not an easy task. And the success of its implementation depends on the correctly selected literature, as well as on your diligence and patience.
It is necessary
- - book;
- - vocabulary;
- - grammar reference;
- - pencil;
- - paper;
- - the Internet.
Instructions
Step 1
Choose for the first time translation from English a book written in simple language (for example, literature for children) or adapted for a Russian reader. You can also use those books that you have already read in Russian. In this case, translation from English will be easier, because you will already know the topic and understand the meaning of the story.
Step 2
Translate text in paragraphs. In what you read, highlight the subject and the predicate, determine how they relate to each other. Find out in what temporal form the verb stands in order to correctly understand the meaning of the text. Do not be lazy to check the grammar reference, especially at the initial stage.
Step 3
Write out new words in a separate notebook and try to memorize them. Firstly, this way you will effectively expand your vocabulary. Secondly, when you come across a given word in the future, avoid the need to look for it in the dictionary.
Step 4
Remember that your main tasks are to understand the content of the book and build your vocabulary. At first, it will be necessary to check almost every word with the dictionary. But it's better not to get carried away too much. Kato Lomb, author of How I Learn Languages, who speaks 16 languages, warned against digging too much in the dictionary. She said that if a word is really important, then it will be repeated over and over again. And it must be translated and memorized without fail.
Step 5
Beware of "dictionary analogy". These are peculiar traps, when the English word is very much reminiscent of the Russian one in pronunciation. In this case, it seems to the novice reader that it means the same as in the native language. Be sure to check the dictionary.
Step 6
Try not to use online services for translating phrases and sentences often. This is especially dangerous if you are not yet very well versed in the grammar of the language. It is better to resort to the help of such translators to translate individual words, so as not to look for them for a long time in a paper analogue. But be careful: online dictionaries do not always offer a complete list of meanings of a word, and also rarely provide a transcription.
Step 7
Read and translate books from English with a pencil in hand. If the book belongs to you, make the necessary notes in the margins, sign the meaning of the word right above it. This is called "working with text". Each time, sitting down again at the book, run your eyes over the pages you have already read.
