At least minimal skills in translation into English are now often required not only in professional activities, but also in everyday life. If you have a basic knowledge of English, you can handle simple translation if you know some important aspects of this field.

Instructions
Step 1
Choose a Russian-English dictionary suitable for the type of words you are translating. There are many ambiguous words in the English language, and the same term, depending on the area of use, can have different meanings.
It is better to choose an average dictionary in terms of the number of words; for a simple translation, from ten to thirty thousand words will be enough. A more detailed dictionary is more difficult to work with; it is needed rather for complex professional translations - technical or literary works. The number of words in the dictionary is indicated either at the beginning or at the end of the book.
Step 2
Find a grammar reference. You may need it, even if you are not translating phrases, but individual words. For example, you may need to put a verb in the correct form according to the tense.
Step 3
Examine the list of abbreviations given at the beginning of the dictionary. Among them there may be important ones that determine the grammatical or semantic use of the word, for example, that this or that word belongs to obsolete or jargon.
Step 4
Start translating. If you are translating a phrase, first find all the words in the dictionary. If a dictionary entry contains several English synonyms, specify the meaning of each. This can be understood by the phrases given in the dictionary entry as an illustration of the use of the word. You can also clarify the meaning of the English synonym in the English-Russian dictionary by finding there the word you are interested in and its reverse translation into Russian.
Step 5
Having found the English analogue of the Russian word, put it in the correct form. For nouns, pay attention to the correct article and number, for verbs - tense and conjugation.
