Uruguayan cinema has long been influenced by Argentine cinema. The first national film was a film called Souls of the Shore, filmed in 1923 by director Juan Antonio Borges. Full-length dramas did not emerge until the 1980s and focused primarily on gaucho herders. Since the late 1990s, Uruguayan cinema has experienced an evolutionary process. His films have received positive reviews and international acclaim.

The director's duo of Pablo Stoll and Juan Pablo Rebelli released the comedy film 25 Watt in 2002. He has received ten awards, including Best Picture at the Rotterdam International Film and Havana Festival. The tape examines the life of young Uruguayans. For 24 hours, Leche, Xavi and Seba share with each other their problems in their studies and relationships with girls. For actor Daniel Endler, the role of Leche became a landmark in his career and brought first fame.

The iconic comedy by Juan Pablo Rebelli is one of the most famous films of Uruguay abroad. She won a prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The plot revolves around unspoken problems between brothers Hermann and Jacobo. Jacobo is the owner of the socks factory, Marta is his employee. The morning call reports that Jacobo's mother has died. He sends a fax to Brazil to his brother Herman, whom he has not seen since childhood, and informs him of the funeral. Jacobo asks Martha to play the role of his wife at the funeral so that his relatives have a good idea of him. The main roles were played by Andre Pasos, Mirella Pascual and Jorge Bolani. Critics called it "Best Latin American Film."
Bad day for fishing (2009)

The comedy "Bad Day for Fishing" was nominated for many prestigious festivals and was officially nominated for an Oscar. The script of the film is based on the eponymous work of the writer Juan Carlos Onetti. They set off on a journey in an old truck to the Atlantic Ocean. The film was filmed in the most beautiful places in Uruguay. The superb cast includes Hugo Arana, Cesar Troncoso, Diego Delgrossi and Julio Calcagno.
The Last Train (2002)

The film, directed by Diego Arsuaga, tells the story of an ambitious businessman Pauls who wants to sell the old 33rd train known as the "Corazón de fuego". A group of elderly people from the Friends of the Rail organization are planning to steal a train to preserve the historical heritage in their homeland. The group of hijackers is led by the Professor, and the train is led by Pepe, who learned how to do it during the Spanish Civil War. They travel by train throughout the country, discovering many abandoned cities and train stops.
Toilet for Daddy (2007)

Directors Cesar Charlon and Enrique Fernandez have released a comedy dedicated to the arrival of Pope John Paul II in Uruguay. The action takes place in the small Uruguayan village of Melo, where people suffer from a lack of social assistance. They are preparing to receive the Pope and want to make money on the thousands of pilgrims who will come to the city from different countries. Beto decides to open a toilet business in the village. The film has received several awards and has been widely acclaimed by international critics.

He watches TV all day, loves heavy metal, sometimes works as a bouncer at a disco. One night, he notices Julia, a cleaning lady. He watches her through cameras while she works, and secretly follows her after work. Hara hides from the woman and never speaks to her. Gradually, he begins to be jealous of her colleague.
Artigas: Redota (2011)

The film by Cesar Charlone is part of the Spanish project "Libertadores" - a series of feature films about the life of Latin American heroes. In 1884, the renowned Uruguayan artist Juan Manuel Blanes was asked to create a portrait of Jose Artigas. There is only one drawing of his face, made in old age. Blanes must imagine what a national hero looked like and reveal his character. Among various materials, Blanes finds the records of the old Spanish spy Anibal Larra, hired by Manuel de Sarratea to kill Artigas. At the time, Artigas was hiding on the banks of the Ayui Creek, north of Uruguay. Larra finds Artigas' camp after contact with his mother. He is assisted by the freed slave Ansina.
