Varlam Tikhonovich Shalamov was born on June 18, 1907 in the family of a priest. The parents of the future writer lived at that time in the city of Vologda. For several years my father was engaged in missionary work, bringing the basics of the Orthodox faith to the natives living in the Aleutian Islands. He was taught from an early age to work and respect for his elders.

In the neighborhood of the house where the Shalamovs lived, lodged "fighters for the freedom of the working class" who were serving their term of exile in Vologda. As a teenager, Varlusha often communicated with these people. When the boy turned seven years old, he was assigned to receive an education at a local gymnasium. He takes an interest in history and literature. He himself tries to compose poetry, observing how people live in the bosom of the harsh northern nature. Creativity captivates the young man and latently outlines the orbit of fate for him.

Varlam freed himself and returned to Moscow to his comrades-in-arms in the struggle.
