Before the world premiere of the psychological thriller The Ring, there was little interest in Japanese horror literature in Europe and America. But after the release, the name of Koji Suzuki turned into a stellar one. The writer has become one of the most widely read of his contemporaries.
Japanese writer Koji Suzuki describes himself as a happy person. According to him, luck always and in everything accompanies him. Childhood was happy, parents never punished their son. The future famous author defined three main tasks in ten years.
Creation of the main piece
He decided to become a writer and create a bestseller. This has been achieved. The second challenge was to marry her first love. This also came true. Ahead is only the crossing of the Pacific Ocean on a yacht.
The biography of the future writer began in 1957, Hamamatsu province, on May 13. The boy showed humanitarian abilities early. After graduating from high school, Suzuki went on to study French literature at Keio University.
The first novel "Rakuen" was created in 1990. The author received many prestigious national awards for his creation. Reviews of the book from critics and readers have been positive. Kozdi continued his literary work by writing world-famous books under the general title "The Ring".
In the first half of the nineties, a trilogy was published. In 1999, the prequel The Bell. Birth". In addition to the legendary cycle, which became the basis for many programs and films, Suzuki composed "Walk of the Gods" and "Dark Waters", which became bestsellers.
Japanese horror literature is unique and complex. It is based on national mythology. The Japanese have a special respect for her. All of Koji's novels are imbued with popular beliefs. Thanks to them, the books not only acquired a special charm, atmosphere, but also a certain motive and even a template according to which events develop.
It is generally accepted that the most favorable time for meeting signs is night. More reliable contact with representatives of the other world is facilitated by the availability of water. It can be washed by any body of water, well, river, even fog or sleet. This is clearly shown in the most famous novel "The Ring" and in "Dark Waters". In the latter, even the name speaks.
National characteristics
In literature, it is customary for all genres, be they comedies or dramas, to be created according to a certain structure. In turn, its basis is formed by the culture of a particular country. American horror films almost always end with a happy ending. The evil in them is defeated, the main character is alive and rewarded. Few European horror stories follow the same developmental stereotype.
Japanese horror literature does not know such a pattern. The main characters can survive, or they can die. Yes, and evil will not go anywhere. It continues to dwell in the human world, constantly disturbing everyone who dares to touch it.
"Call" becomes an excellent introductory tool for everyone who knows little about such stories. Koji skillfully expounds that very moment of interference in the usual way of life of mysticism and some kind of evil. The main essay begins with the deaths of several people. The reason is quite certain, it is heart failure. There is nothing supernatural about it.
The uncle of one of the victims is journalist Kazuyuki Asakawa. He decides on his own investigation. In its course, he finds out that the cause was a virus that infected everyone on one day. All the dead four visited the Pacific Land tourist complex a week ago.
Asakawa goes there immediately. He takes the number that the guys lived in a few days ago. The manager tells the reporter that the company watched the video stored at the hotel. Kazuyuki is also watching the video. He is amazed by it.
Asakawa makes a copy. He shows it to his friend Ryuuji Takayama. By chance the cassette ends up in the hands of the latter's wife and child. Takayama understands that it is worth finding out who recorded the video and how they did it. The friends manage to find out that the author was the deceased Sadako Yamamura. The girl had the ability to transfer imaginary things to material carriers with the power of thought. It becomes clear to Asakawa and Takayuma that in order to destroy the curse, it is necessary to give the spirit of Sadako peace by reburying her remains.
Endless narration
Evil becomes the central antagonist in the literature of the Land of the Rising Sun. In the narrative, the climax is the Pacific Land Hotel. It was erected on the site of the death of the girl. The killer hid the victim in a well, on the site of which a hotel was built.
The heroes return Sadako's body to her loved ones for reburial. After that, no one dies at the appointed time. This makes it possible to think that the spell has been broken. But the next day becomes Takayume's last. Asakawa realizes that he himself remained alive only in order to multiply the virus. Evil will consume more and more human lives, it is impossible to stop it.
For a very long time, the work did not have a title. The writer accidentally found the word "ring" in an English-Japanese dictionary. At the same time, it was translated as the verb "to call" and as the noun "ring". The author figured out that the title issue has been resolved. It was in this English word that the philosophical and material motives of the book converged.
In the novel, a bell is a phone signal that rings out after watching the tape. The devices themselves are endowed with a special mysticism. According to Suzuki's interpretation, the ring is a look into the well from the inside. This is a ring of evil that enveloped its victims, and circles on the water, without which Japanese horror films cannot do.
The author currently works for one of the national newspapers. He writes autobiographical articles for publication. He has happily established a personal life. Koji is married and has daughters. He goes in for sports and continues to work. There are ideas for new compositions as well.
