Biography

Yuri Shcherbakov was born in 1945, on April 28. The hometown of the filmmaker is Rostov-on-Don. His father Nikolai Shcherbakov was an invalid who participated in the Great Patriotic War.

The child grew up as an obedient boy, studied well, for which he was awarded a diploma at school "For exemplary behavior and academic performance." Together with the award, he was presented with a violin. But Yuri did not have a musical education, and, unable to withstand fake violin-playing, his parents asked to replace the musical instrument with a camera. And this became a serious impetus in the choice of Yura's future profession. He became seriously interested in photography.

A young photographer from the 4th grade, filling his hand every day, declared that when he grows up, he will definitely devote his life to cinema. In the 7th grade, he did not abandon his dream, in parallel with receiving a general education he entered the film amateur studio. In the 9th he signed up for a small film studio at the local recreation center.

First steps in cinematography

Having studied well at school, immediately after the school graduation, in 1963, a talented young man was hired, he became an assistant cameraman in an adult professional documentary film studio. A year later, at the call, he went to serve as a conscript in the Soviet Army. In 1965, he graduated from the training unit, which trained commanders. Then he was sent to serve in an anti-aircraft artillery regiment, he got into an armored division, becoming the commander of communications in it. But even there he did not abandon his hobby and vocation, and, by order of the Commander of the North Caucasus Military District, a year later he personally filmed and video-edited the documentary film "Honor the Glory of the Fathers", dedicated to the Cossack cavalry.

In 1967, after completing his service, Sergeant Shcherbakov was taken on a permanent job at the Rostov film studio as an assistant operator. A couple of years later, he was transferred to the Vorkuta television studio in the direction of the Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting of the Komi ASSR in the Arctic. Here he shot a large number of plots, sketches, and also created the author's film "Old and Big Trees", which was nominated and awarded the prize of the 1st Komi Film Festival of the ASSR.

The need for higher education haunted, because theoretical experience and practice would expand the creative possibilities of Shcherbakov. And in 1971, Yuri Nikolaevich submitted documents to the cameraman department of VGIK and graduated from it with brilliance five years later. His thesis with an "excellent" mark was the documentary film "Brigadier GROZ".

A year later, in 1977, the talented cameraman and director was admitted to the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR. At the same time, he received the highest categories in these two areas. In 1978, he entered the courses for cinematography workers, which were also conducted at VGIK, and graduated with honors as a professional director.

Career

  • After receiving his diploma, Yuri Nikolaevich was elected artistic director of the local association "Contact".
  • Then he became the artistic director of a film studio called "Badge of Honor" of the Rostov Order.
  • Since 2002, for 8 years, his position was called the leading specialist of the press service of the Rostov mayor.
  • Then he became the head of the media monitoring department in the administration of his hometown under the city administration.
  • Then a new, pedagogical stage began, from 2009 to 2012, he worked as a teacher of the 1st category of directing and cinematography in his hometown - at the local College of Culture.

Shcherbakov wrote a book entitled "My own cameraman and director" and published it in 2000. He is also the author of the book "Unknown Chernyshev". Some of his literary works at different times were published in Rostov and Moscow magazines, almanacs, newspapers.

Awards and regalia

Yuri Shcherbakov is rightfully the Honorary Cinematographer of the Russian Federation, he has been awarded many times by authorities at all levels.

Personal life

The man has been happily married since 1966. He and his wife have two sons, who have given the happy grandfather and grandmother four grandchildren - three girls and one boy.

Work today

Despite his advanced age, in 2015 Yu. N. Shcherbakov agreed to the position of professor and head of the Creative Workshop of non-fiction film directors at the VGIK branch in the Rostov region. Here, to this day, he teaches the directions "Directing in Cinema", "Composition in Photography" and "Mastery of the Cameraman". He actively and enjoys working with novice filmmakers.

The entire conscious life of Yuri Shcherbakov is associated with culture, creativity and art - that which can be captured on film. He is equally fond of writing scripts, directing cinematography and cinematography, including field work. This talented man has devoted over 50 years of his life to his profession.
