Step 1
Select the book you would like to translate. Consider your level of foreign language proficiency. If you are familiar with medical, computer, or automotive vocabulary, you can translate one of the books on these topics. In addition, the translation of scientific and technical literature is now often paid better than translation of works of fiction. If you have already worked as a literary translator and have proven yourself well, contact the publishers, they may have a job for you.
Step 2
Check online for translations of your chosen book. Focus, first of all, on the author's first and last name, and not on the title, since publications quite often change the names of translated literature.
Step 3
Contact publishers. Write a letter to the editor, indicate which work you intend to translate, and attach a small fragment of the translation, for example, the first chapter. You also need to attach a synopsis to the letter, i.e. a short description of the plot, for a work of art or a detailed plan of a scientific and technical or journalistic book. If the publishing house has a department of foreign literature, then it is necessary to contact him.
Step 4
Resolve the copyright issue. Usually the publishing house is engaged in this, but you can independently apply for permission to translate from a foreign author, his literary agent or publisher. If consent to the translation is obtained, all further financial and legal issues with foreign partners are resolved through the publishing house.
Step 5
Do not translate a book to the end until you have contracted the work. You may not get permission to translate from the copyright holder or the publishing plans will change, and then the translation will not be accepted for publication, and your work will not be paid.
Step 6
Translate the book. Try to meet the deadlines agreed with the publisher, and fulfill all the terms of the contract on your part. Watch not only for the accuracy of the translation, but also for strict adherence to the lexical, grammatical and stylistic norms of the Russian language. If your translation is done well, it will be published and you will receive the payment due to you.
