Indira Gandhi was born into a family of famous Indian politicians Jawaharlal and Kamala Nehru on November 19, 1917. The baby's father and grandfather belonged to the elite of Brahmins, they were members of the Indian National Congress. Since childhood, the girl has absorbed the love of freedom and independence. As an only child in the family, Indira communicated mainly with adults, participated in rallies and protests, and was constantly present when discussing the political situation in the country. As a true heir to the Nehru dynasty, even playing with her peers, the future head of India organized social unions and made political speeches.
Personal life
Initially receiving a high-quality home education, at the age of 17 the girl managed to enter the People's University of India, but two years later she had to leave her studies. The father was sent to prison, the mother fell ill with tuberculosis, and Indira accompanied her to Switzerland for treatment. The treatment failed, and Kamala soon died. In Europe, the girl met her future husband Feroz Gandhi. The Nehru family did not approve of this connection, so the young people were in no hurry to return to their homeland. Indira entered the University of Oxford. After the outbreak of World War II, Indira and Feroz returned home. In India, the young got married. In marriage, two boys were born with a difference of two years. After the proclamation of India's independence, Jawaharlal Nehru was elected Prime Minister. Indira was his permanent secretary and devoted herself entirely to politics, while her husband took care of children and family. In 1960, the husband died. Indira was very worried about the loss and for some time could not engage in politics. The following year, she first became a member of the INC committee, then, when her father died, the minister of information and broadcasting in the government of India.

In 1964, Indira became the first female Prime Minister of India. During Gandhi's rule, the country made significant advances in the economy and agriculture, including through such unpopular methods as the nationalization of banks. In 1971, Indira was forced to retire. In 1980, she again won elections and ruled the country until her tragic death. On 1984-31-10, the Prime Minister was shot by her Sikh guards after an operation to suppress the unrest of Sikh militants. The era of prosperity of the Indian state under the leadership of a talented woman politician gave way to a long period of decline.
