Biography

Yuri Viktorovich Kara was born in 1954 in the Ukrainian city of Donetsk. Since childhood, he showed versatile interests: he studied at a mathematical school and at the same time in a music school.

After graduating from school, he went to Moscow to enroll in the Faculty of Physics and Chemistry. He was one of the best students, as well as the head of the institute's vocal and instrumental group. After university, Kara worked as an engineer-radiophysicist, became a candidate of sciences. However, he constantly felt that he lacked creativity.

The path to the cinema

Most of all, Yuri was attracted by cinema, and at the age of twenty-eight he entered the VGIK, the directing department. His graduation work was the painting "Tomorrow was the war" (1987), where the main roles were played by students. Later, the film was shown in 48 countries around the world.

It was a great success: the film "Tomorrow Was the War" was nominated for many awards, became a laureate of film awards in many countries of the world.

The second film "Thieves in law" brought the director even more recognition from the audience and critics. Here he showed how the society is permeated with corruption and crime - he raised a relevant topic. This film was also awarded with awards, although the Soviet censorship missed it with great difficulty.

The versatility of Kara's interests and hobbies manifested itself in the cinema: along with serious films, he shot videos for "Yeralash" - a popular TV magazine, and was also engaged in advertising.

One of the so-called "serious" films of Yuri Viktorovich was the picture "Feasts of Belshazzar, or Night with Stalin." The film was shown at the box office in many countries, it was even watched in the US Congress.

However, not everything was so smooth in Kara's work - his films have always caused a lot of controversy and they were not always given permission to be released. For example, the film The Master and Margarita (1993) lay on the shelf for many years before the audience saw it. The film stars Mikhail Ulyanov, Sergei Garmash, Valentin Gaft and other famous actors.

Kara's pictures about the designer Sergei Korolev are very interesting. He addressed this topic twice - in 2007 he made the film "Korolev", and in 2015 the film "Chief" was released. To write the script, Yuri Viktorovich used the memories of the daughter of the chief designer and archival materials.
