Martin Gore is a British poet, guitarist, keyboardist, singer and DJ. He is one of the founders and permanent members of the legendary musical group "Depeche Mode".
Biography
Martin Lee Gore was born on 23 July 1961 in Dagenham, a suburb of London. The family later moved to Basildon. Martin's grandfather and stepfather worked at the Ford plant, and his mother worked in a nursing home.
Martin has been interested in music since childhood. He loved the work of glam rock musicians such as Gary Glitter, David Bowie and Roxy Music. Later, he became interested in the music of techno-style and synthpop artists such as Kraftwerk, The Human League and Gary Newman.
Martin very early learned to play the guitar and the piano, participating in youth groups. While still at school, he met future Depeche Mode member Andy Fletcher. In addition to music, Martin Gore studied foreign languages, in particular German, and loved to read books. After leaving school, Martin worked for about six months as a clerk in one of the London banks and, having saved up money, was able to purchase his first Yamaha CS5 synthesizer.
The popularity of electronic music grew and Martin played in two bands at the same time: Composition of Sound, organized by Vince Clarke, and French Look. Soon he decided to participate only in the Vince Clarke group, and the young musicians began rehearsals. At this time, lead singer Dave Gahan joined the group. The band played their first concert on June 21, 1980 in the Top Alex pub. Despite the lack of expensive equipment, Composition of Sound quickly gained popularity due to Dave's charisma and Vince Clarke's catchy songs.
Martin Gore also wrote songs for the group, although they were mainly instrumental compositions. At the end of 1980, two important events took place for Martin and the band. Dave Gahan's idea to rename the band Depeche Mode was accepted, and Vince Clarke left the band. Martin Gore took over as chief lyricist.
Creation
Creativity in Depeche Mode
Martin Gore is the composer of the vast majority of Depeche Mode's music. Sometimes at the performances of the group, compositions in his vocal performance are heard: "Home", "Somebody", "A Question of Lust" and others.
After Vince Clarke left the band, in September 1982, the band's second numbered album, "A Broken Frame", was released, and the first album, in which the songwriter was Martin Gore. The album took the eighth position in the charts, which was a good result for a group that was just gaining momentum. The sound of the album "A Broken Frame" has changed towards refined melody, dark moods in the arrangements, defining the main musical vector of Depeche Mode's work. Subsequent albums ("Construction Time Again", 1983 and "Some Great Reward", 1984) develop and further formalize the "corporate" style of the group Depeche Mode, which is based on the lyrics and music of Martin Gore.
Consistently developing his creative success, after the release of the fourth album of the group, Martin Gore took a short break, and in November 1985 began to work on new material. The band's next album, Black Celebration, released in 1986, turned out to be even darker and at the same time versatile. In four songs on this album, Martin Gore showed himself as a vocalist, which was not there before. Album "Black Celebration" marked the final design of the musical style of the group Depeche Mode, took the 3rd place in the UK charts, and the first in Switzerland.
At the end of September 1987, the album "Music for the Masses" was released, which was a great success not only in Europe, but also in the USA. During the recording of this album, Martin Gore was no longer only a lyricist and played the synthesizer, but also played guitar parts. The new musical and lyrical components of this album prepared and guided the musicians to their main success in 1990. Following the release of Music for the Masses, Depeche Mode embarked on a massive world tour. The California performance was released as a live album titled "101".
After a one-year hiatus, the band's seventh studio album, Violator, is released, which has become Depeche Mode's most commercial album. The album has sold over 6 million copies and has received critical and fan acclaim. Until now, the album "Violator" is considered one of the best in the work of the group. Martin Gore does not like to interpret the lyrics of his songs, indicating only the main topics that interest him at one time or another in his life.
Solo career
In addition to his constant participation in the work of Depeche Mode, Martin Gore released two solo albums - "Counterfeit e.p." (1988) and "Counterfeit 2" (2003), which include cover versions of songs by other artists, arranged by Martin. These albums not only revealed the musical range of Martin Gore's tastes, but also allowed him to prove himself as a vocalist. Along with this, Martin participates with Vince Clarke in the VCMG technical duo, which was organized in 2011.
Personal life
Like many famous artists, Martin Gore has always enjoyed female attention. Of his novels, the most serious were relations with the Englishwoman Anne Swindell and the German woman Christine Friedrich.
The first choice of Martin Gore was Suzanne Boysworth. They got married in 1994. Three children were born in the marriage: daughters Viva Lee Gore (1991) and Eva Lee Gore (1995), as well as the son of Keilo Leon Gore (2002). In 2006, the couple divorced. Martin suffered the breakup very painfully. He expressed these feelings in his song "Precious", dedicated to children.
For about five years, Martin Gore was content with short novels. In 2011, he met Kerily Kaski and married her in June 2014.
