"Forgotten", "Girl", "Beauty of the Day" - it is impossible to name any of Buñuel's most outstanding films. He worked in the genre of surrealism.

Childhood and youth

The great film master was born in 1999 in February in the Spanish city of Calande. Luis's parents were wealthy landowners. But the son's desire to increase family goodness and continue the dynasty never arose.

The master often recalled the special atmosphere of his hometown. The inhabitants of Kalanda followed the ancient traditions that have survived from the Middle Ages. Superstition coexisted with religiosity. This bizarre mix left an imprint on Bunuel's future work.

After the age of seventeen, Luis began his studies at the University of Madrid. He had many famous comrades. Especially close friendships developed with Salvador Dali and Federico Lorca.

The master could not forget his childhood dream, connect his fate with cinema. In 1920 Buñuel founded one of the first film clubs in Europe.

In 1925, the maestro at the Paris Film Academy became a listener. He later received the position of assistant to the then famous director Jean Epstein.

First experiences

Louis managed to declare himself as a screenwriter for the first time in 1928, with his participation in the creation of the painting "The Fall of the House of Usher" based on the work of Edgar Poe.

The Andalusian Forest, a short film, was the maestro's debut work. The painting was created in 1929. His own dreams and those told by Dali inspired Buñuel. He only, in his words, embodied what he saw on the screen.

Not without reason, Louis feared that his first job would shock him. Because of the whimsical surreal imagery. In a small tape, the director also acted as an actor. In the prologue, he played the role of a man armed with a razor.

Subsequently, Bunuel recalled that at the premiere, he grabbed stones to fend off indignant people. No protection was needed. The audience liked the work of the master so much that they didn't even think about the fight.

True, later the paintings of the maestro often became scandalous. This happened with the 1930 film "Golden Age". It was banned from showing for half a century.

The tape attacked religious beliefs. Only five years later, the drama of 1032 "Land without bread" was allowed to be shown. In it, the director spoke about the difficult working conditions of the peasants.

A similar fate was prepared for the paintings "Sentinel, alarm!" and "Who loves me?"

A new round of career

Buñuel suffered from the fascist regime. Due to government attacks, the maestro moved to the United States in 1932.

The move was the reason for a forced break in creativity. Nothing has been filmed for fifteen years: working as an editor in Hollywood, part-time at the Museum of Modern Art.

But all the time the director dreamed of returning to his beloved work. In 1947, a turning point came. The genius moved to Mexico, where he received citizenship a couple of years later and again began to create film masterpieces.

Then he shot his first famous drama "Forgotten", dedicated to youth crime. The plot focuses on the difficult life of teenagers from poor families in Mexico. The painting has won several prestigious awards, including BAFTA. The master presented the film "Veredineya" to the audience in 1961.

The earlier drama "Nazarin" shows the story of a priest who renounced his dignity and went on a journey. He had to rescue a prostitute accused of murdering a colleague in the craft.

The painting of Mexican-Italian production has become one of the outstanding works. The plot develops around the secret passion of a man in love with his own niece. He interferes with her desire to go to the monastery, and as a result, a strong feeling makes an impression on the girl.

Masterpieces of the master

In 1972, the master made The Modest Charm of the Bourgeoisie. The work made a very strong impression on the audience. The surreal sketch shows the worthlessness of the life of the modern middle class.

The creator of the masterpiece not only received recognition from the public, but also an Oscar. The same award went to the drama Tristana, a story of retaliation, released a few years earlier, starring Catherine Deneuve.

The comedy Franco-Italian film drama "Milky Way" tells about vagabonds who become participants in strange and sometimes fantastic events during their travels.

In 1974 the comedy film The Phantom of Freedom was released. It seems to consist of separate episodes. But this is only at first glance. Gradually, all the passages create a single picture.

The master makes fun of the hypocrisy of society. Bunuel's last film was the 1977 drama "This Vague Object of Desires." It tells about a young beauty who charmed an elderly man. She likes to feel her power over him.

The fatal seductress, as conceived by the author, was performed by two actresses. This technique showed the duality of one personality. According to critics, the latest masterpiece turned out to be cocky and bright.

The fans were also impressed. More than a single film Buñuel did not shoot due to health problems.

Family life

In 1934, the maestro married Jeanne Rukard. The newlyweds met eight years before the wedding.

The wife gave her husband two sons, Raphael and Juan Luis. Both received a director's education, but did not achieve their father's fame.

After the death of her husband, Jeanne released her memoirs. In them, fans could learn about the unknown aspects of the personality of the outstanding master. In everyday life, he turned out to be a real tyrant.

The wife had no right to work: she would have to communicate with other men, and a jealous man could not allow this.

He held the family budget only in his own hands, reluctantly parted with money.

Louis kept his thrift habits even after his star status. In July 1983, the great director passed away. He has already celebrated his 83rd birthday.
